Warbirds of America has an exemption that allows the N numbers on true Warbird aircraft to be displayed under the horizontal stabilizer.

Interesting - I didn't know that.

Note that this exemption doesn't work for homebuilts that are painted like warbirds, although many people seem to think it does.
