Bolt hole treatment (wood)

For bolt holes in wood, is there any issue with metal contacting wood? Do I need to treat the hole with varnish before inserting the bolt? Thank you.

This cadmium-plated bolt was installed through the wooden structure of my Fly Baby in about 1978. This picture was taken ~35 years later.

So, yes, you need to varnish the holes before sticking in the bolts.
