What would you think of adapting a small distributor to the magneto shaft on a O-290 G that had been converted for aviation use?
In it's new use, the benefits of the magneto would no longer be necessary, and the costs of magneto rebuild would be eliminated.
Also, has anyone had any experience adapting an automotive electronic ignition to the mag drive; again because of cost?

The only reason to use a distributor is for the vacuum advance. No other reason to use one. So if the application calls for an ignition that would need such a unit you will need a distributor. Such as in an auto were you go from slow idle running to partial running without ever going wide open. In a case like this you want a vacuum advance unit. It also helps in starting when you are not using an impulse coupler.
I like a mag over any electronic unit. Electronics just fail without warning. Anything using points and condenser you get a warning when things start going bad.
