EAA Monthly Photo Contest - March, 2012

The photo contest continues!

Submit your photos for the change to see it used as our featured wallpaper download:http://www.eaa.org/wallpaper/ (http://www.eaa.org/wallpaper/)

Here's how it works:
First, you’ll take a great photo, one that evokes the spirit of aviation. Feel free to include a caption or any other notes about the setting, subject matter, etc. The "spirit of aviation" is a broad definition - show us pictures OF aircraft, pictures taken FROM aircraft, people thinking ABOUT aircraft ... well, as long as it's obvious ... anyway, you get the idea.
Then, you’ll reply to this thread and embed the picture in your post. (We prefer it if you include just one picture per post.) Note: to embed a picture, click the image button on the toolbar to find and upload the file .... Please use this method to make the picture immediately visible as opposed to simply attaching the file.

As our deadline approaches, the photo submissions will be reviewed by the editorial team (and me), meeting in a secure and undisclosed location, and we will choose a winner to be used as our featured wallpaper (with full and appropriate credit, naturally.)
We’ll contact the photographer directly to arrange for their submission of a high-res version of the winning photo as needed (see below.) We’ll also provide the basic legalese at that point to ensure that we have the rights to publish the photo.
There are a few things to point out:

The photo contest is open to all members of EAA.
Note that, above, we said you’ll take the photo – submissions must be made by the original photographer.
Photos must be posted here to be considered – email submissions will not be accepted.
In addition, the pictures you post here will be automatically resized for web viewing, which means they may not be of a high-enough resolution for the desktop wallpaper. So, in order for your picture to be considered for publication, you must be able to provide a high resolution version on request.
This means that the original should ideally be 3 Megapixels (~2048 x 1536) or higher.

Enter as many pictures as you like – the more the merrier! (Though, again, we prefer you post each picture separately.)

NOTE:
The deadline for submissions to the March 2012 contest is
January 15th, 2012.

OK - if non-N-registered aircraft are acceptable, I might have a couple of suggestions as well.

Last Tuesday I thought I'd do a cross country flight today and spent some time working out a flight plan. The morning was cold and so I decided to take my written test instead. When I called the testing guys at the Austin airport their equipment was down. The guys at New Braunfels wouldn't answer the phone so I decided to go to Georgetown. Why drive when I can fly, right?

As it turns out Georgetown was the first stop on my planned cross country (because they have cheap avgas) anyway. I taxied to the testing place, took off my sunglasses and they fell apart. The guys there loaned me a paper clip to put them back together.

Taking the test I got an 83. Not what I'd hoped for but it's a solid B. I'll take it.

To qualify for a cross country flight the two airports have to be 50 miles apart. Georgetown is 49.9 miles from Lockhart so I flew from there to Burnett. Flying at 3000 feet I passed a tower that was as high as me. That was kind of spooky. By the time I got to Burnett there wasn't time for a meal so I had my second candy bar of the day and headed home. I'd planned to take the scenic route but time wasn't permitting so I took the shortest route and landed just before sunset.

Here's a pic of Ariel (yes, she has a name now) illuminated by the sun's last rays.

I'm going to post a few more pics here just to share them. When I see something I like I take a photo. Hopefully others will enjoy some of them.

These guys just dropped in to our little local airport.

We only needed 15 Young Eagles to set a new record of 250 in 2011. 8 am crew show and we had a beautiful south Georgia fog. Fog lifted at 10 and we flew 13. We'll try again next year!

Taken from my PA22 as we were climbing out of KONA over the backwaters of the Mississippi on January 8th. The warm temperatures this winter and the repeated freezing and unfreezing of the Mississippi make for some beautiful sights.

First off I know this photo doesn't qualify but wanted to share it anyway becasue it really is a great aviation photo that captures a moment in time.

There is nothing like a sunset from above! This photo was taken by my good friends Bobbie and Richard Chappell of Bellevue Nebraska when they came to see my new to me toy, a 1985 Starflight ultralight. I keep it hangered at the Scribner Nebraska Airbase which is now a state of Nebraska run airfield. It was an important bomber training base during WWII and in the early 1950's was the "backup" airport for Offutt AFB in the event of an atomic war. Now it is a sleepy little airport with a very interesting history and lots of older airplanes and ultralights. If you are flying thru Nebraska take a minute to touch down on the same runway that thousands of young men flew training missions from. You can almost hear the big radials still singing in the Nebraska wind.
