Thanks, Ron. I'm getting my first Pfizer tomorrow. It sounds like it isn't nearly as bad as my first Shingrix shot (got four weeks ago) which had me nearly unable to walk for a day. My wife laughed about my reaction until it hit her about twelve hours later (my onset and recovery were faster for some reason).

Looking forward to AirVenture 2021. Interested in the new Express Arrival. But a few thoughts come to mind.
1. In regards to Camp Scholler. Will a separate entry gate be used for Express Arrivals, so that they don’t get caught in lines of campers that use standard arrival procedures? This has always been a problem for those that pre-purchase camping. They get stuck in the long line out on the feeder road, due to all lines of the entry gate being full. It would be helpful to have a separate entry gate for Express Arrivals, and efficient way to “redirect” standard arrivals that accidently approach the wrong entry gate, so their error doesn’t cause delays for those with Express Arrival.
2. Will it be possible to request a set of single day entry wrist bands as part of Express Arrival, instead of the single weekly band? The first thing I do, after a hot day “walking the grounds and on the flight line”, and upon return to camp, is cut that *$#@ wrist band off my wrist, so I can enjoy the evening and my sleep without the bothersome band.
3. Perhaps the Camp Scholler Express Arrival gate can utilize hand held scanners, to scan passes that are pre-mounted on the vehicle (inside windshield?) so that vehicles can pass through in a rapid manner, thereby realizing the concept of an Express Arrival.
Just a few thoights for consideration.

You would think it would work that way. Based on my experience with advanced purchased parking permit your suggestion is a too difficult concept for EAA to conceive. In fact I quit buying an advanced parking permit because you just get stuck inline with the cash payers. So buying an advanced permit gets you what?? I’ve noted this in the post event survey with no apparent response.
On the flip side I credit EAA with advanced mailing of the wristbands. Given their fear of wristbands being counterfeited and lost revenues someone made a monumental decision.

I agree with the above . Pre Pay doesn't do any good if you have to wait in the line . Ripple will work just fine . Put up some large signs on the perimeter road telling Pre Pays to use Ripple !

Prepay doesn't mean you have camping credentials does it? The prepay just lets the eaa suck your money early. You still have to trade your receipt in for the actual credentials. The main gate is the same disaster with people who prepurchase. It doesn't end up saving any time.

Express Arrival - Camping check-in:
Express Arrival camping check-in will allow attendees who pre-purchases their camping to enter Camp Scholler without exiting their car. Simply present your mailed or printed at home voucher at the entry point, and you’ll be on your way!
A separate entry gate will be utilized for express camping check-in. If utilizing express check-in you will enter Camp Scholler via the Gray Lot entrance, which is located a few hundred feet north of the main Camp Scholler entrance on Poberezny Rd.
This is only for Camp Scholler arrivals on Thursday July 22 through Sunday July 25.
Express camping check-in is recommended for people who don't have any questions. If you do or aren't sure how to get to your campsite, it's recommended you follow the signage for "Camp Scholler Regular Check-in".
Upon arrival, you will have a choice which lane you’d like to use. Simply follow the directional signs.

After 28 years of Oshkosh attendance, we often don't much make it north of the Vintage red barn during the show. The exception is meeting up with POA folk at Jay Honeck's party on Wednesday night. Most of our friends are Vintage folks and we volunteer on the fight line there. We're definitely going this year. Margy and I will both have our second Pfizer shot by the end of the month. The only complication this year is our third grandson is due the week before we would normally travel (we usually arrive Tuesday or Wednesday a week before the show). Our current plans is my wife will go to be with her daughter, and I'll scoop her up from GAI on the way. DC-> OSH as apposed to NC26-OSH avoids some terrain that a friend of mine refers to as "North Korea." (which is about what your life expectancy would be if you went down there).

My sister and I got out first vaccinations in separate ques of 3100 each on successive days at the beginning of March and our window for a second dose opens first for me on February 28 and is urgent after 44 days from the first when I can simply walk in if not called before.

My situation with respect to attending Oshkosh in person this year is not having a routine way to arrive and secure lodging. I have not owned or driven an automobile or held a driver's license since 1987. To get to the Harley-Davidson museum after I retired I took Amtrak from Birmingham, Michigan and stayed in the Iron Horse Hotel nearby in Milwaukee where I could walk over every day. To get to the "Tail Hook" celebration in Reno, I flew commercial Air connecting at Phoenix from Detroit and stayed at the conference hotel using the courtesy shuttle both ways.
Now I am in Austin, Texas. I need to have enough funds to charter a jet! Then where would I stay? I don't think my sister is willing to do a whole week, which I would prefer. Taking AMTRAK staying in Chicago and taking the hourly train to Milwaukee and back each day leaves me needing to rent a bicycle to get to Oshkosh and the grounds and everyone would think it was public and take off with it whenever I left it unattended.
Skydiving in? I envy the campers; camped under the wings of their aircraft. I mostly talked to Boeing last year online and viewed the podcasts so this year I would like to do much better. If I can't really be there I could at least make a donation to the foundation equal to what it would have cost me as I did the first year with Tail hook Education Foundation.
In 2003 I was able to see the A/RIA I had done the mission analysis for outside at the Dayton Air Museum but not go to the AIAA 100 years of Flight Conference. I have a blow up of myself beside the "Bird of Prey" NC-135 my sister took and my grandson now has one also to move beyond Camaro's based on the Transformer's Bumblebee.
My parents got me to Warner-Robbins and the 1st production F-15 "Eagle" to update my FX-proposal data and simulation as well as seeing how downgraded in presentation the Korean War exhibits have become.

I'm not used to landing on grass. This video https://www.avgeekery.com/watch-when-the-marines-first-flew-scooters-from-chu-lai-in-1965/ shows the SATS that with the P-408 version of the J-52 turbojet allowed to remain in inventory as the A-7E with the TF-41 turbofan and ILAAS weapon delivery system needed me to do one more thing.
I had to show the payload moved from this metal runway and it's effectiveness provided by a new avionics system, replacing the LABS in an A-4M exceeded that for the newer A-7. The engineer from North American Aircraft's Autonetics Division dropped out after gathering the data and assembling concepts for competing Options. Later the requirement for this system was mutually combined with that for the AV-8A "Harrier" Angle Rate Bombing System or ARBS. Yes, I worked on that other system which also needed to land on grass and got fiberglass pads.

Well, you could get your drivers license, fly to a town/city and rent a car, van or camper, (although, it may be hard to find anything as AirVenture nears) and drive the rest of the way. And, if you did rent a car/van, you could bring camping gear and set up in Camp Scholler. It's roughly 1268 mi. from Austin to Oshkosh, 20 hrs driving, it could be done in 2 days, or, switching off with another driver, you could make it in one and two thirds days. I have driven the 976 mi. from S.C. to Oshkosh twice, first time we stopped south of Chicago and had about a 3 & 1/2 hr. drive the next day. the second time, when I arrived at the place where we had stopped on the first trip, it was only 5:30 pm so we decided to go past Chicago and stop for the night. BIG MISTAKE !!! Couldn't find a motel room anywhere, so we continued driving and arrived at A/V at 9:30 pm. with a pop up camper. A little over 19 hrs. on the road, it's raining, dark, and about 300 yards from check in, we are stuck in the mud. They said they would help us out the next morning, which they did, but we had to sleep in the truck after all that driving and the back seat was fill and we couldn't let the seats go back. A kinda fun memory now, but that first night there really sucked. But I ain't skered, I'm a goin' back this year and I hopes to be flyin' in!

Oshkosh is about 88 miles north of Milwaukee. Might be a one daily bus.
No easy way to get to Airventure. Not much help on EAA website.

I looked for something on the arresting gear that went with SATS and also used the term landing in a search and got the whole story on Chu Lai which is almost all at the Westmoreland level and General Carl with McNamara. and it's in May 1965 when I just graduated from University of Michigan and headed West in my Chevrolet powered 1948 Ford to land on all the cool engineering company's lobbys and get immediate or delayed interviews based on the Student Affairs listing of research organizations by state and region.
So I understand driving night and day and sleeping a few winks with seat backs that were blocked by stuff on the floor and back seat. I did remove the cotter pin on the passenger seat so I could go Nash Rambler full recline with it with stuff on the floor for a foot rest. There is a full history of Chu Lai made by Ohio State but my uncle was a history professor at Ohio Wesleyan and my USMC uncle is where I landed in Canoga Park, California with tail lights blinking on the freeway from hot mufflers after the rerouting when the second y header and outside drag pipe was fabricated like on a Continental Mark II. Ties into Andersonville and the POW museum there in Georgia and not so much to Marion, New York and the Confederate POW facility there during the Civil War-- jump to some golden tablets discovered nearby and then to a Honda 600 and a detective in a light blue suit and a neighbor just converted to Latter Day Saints. The Advanced Design (Advance Design after 1973) Chief engineer said, "Here is the contact for the new head of Survivability of the NAVY. He was a prisoner of war so nobody but you wants to meet him." I found him in the ASW building in Arlington next to the Housing and Urban Development Headquarters where busses had broken up the beautiful slate circular driveway. Later in 1983 when I said to my new friends, outdoors,"I can't hide it! and later in a room, "notice how the land falls away in 4 directions from where I am standing." So much for a career in STEALTH. My path led through the CRUISE.

there are commercial flights to Appleton (ATW). You would have to change planes somewhere between AUS and ATW. There are shuttles between ATW and OSH AirVenture. You could also make a reservation for lodging at university of WI, OSH. Ther are daily bus runs from campus to airventure.

Lodging is where I am and these nearer places look better than what I was at yesterday at Green Bay and a bus. For taking the bus once, maybe, including getting back at night-- but I am not as "in" at EAA as I am with jets. I think I need the weekly ticket which I have printed out to hold the dates (7/26-8/1). Right now my delay is to my second vaccination and surety I don't get quarantined. That window opens on the 28th of March. Your information is much appreciated. I looked at Fond Du Lac but did not see the air connection there. The EAA was mentioned there.

The nearest service to OSH by the majors is Appleton (ATW). It’s only 20 minutes or so north of Oshkosh. You can get into ATW via Minneapolis, Detroit and Chicago and others. There is bus service out of MKE north but no express service. Limo service is pricey. Rental cars are worth their weight in gold during AV. If you’re planning on attending book your reservations early. Welcome to Oshkosh!!!

There are cabins for rent near by but you would need transportation to A/V. The exception would be Sleepy Hollow Farms Campground, it's adjacent to Camp Scholler and, at least a few years ago, would take you to the EAA gate in a golf cart. They have nice showers and toilets.

I've been studying up on the new tram routes and terminals based on that 2019 (IMHO 50% Donkey) "Transportation Study" by Northwestern. Just my no-cost to anyone two-cents worth of opinions (LOL) - Blue is likely to take forever to run and leave many unhappy folks along the way watching nothing but our full trams go by, Yellow is way too short and the new 'part-time' Purple route is just going to cause confusion at that terminal. Losing Green will come as a major shock/grievance to attendees as well.
But hey - I ain't no Northwestern graduate ner nuthin' - I'm just one of the many poor schlubbs that will have to implement these changes and interact with our AirVenture visitors.

Here are a couple of options that I have tried, or was planning to use for Osh 2020. I hope that you find something useful. My accommodation was always the University of Wisconsin (Oshkosh) dorms (excellent).
1. I have previously flown with airlines from LAX to Appleton (ATW), via Chicago (ORD) when coming from Australia. Or, I have flown from LaGuardia to ATW via ORD when I happened to be in NYC. A change of plane is required at ORD. From ATW, you can take a taxi to the university or, if your flight arrives at the appropriate time, get on one of the bus shuttles to the university.
2. Fly by airline from your home town to ORD. From ORD there's a bus service that can get you to Milwaukee Intermodal Station (MIS). From the MIS you can take the Lamers to the university.

During Oshkosh, travel between the university and Wittman airport is easy by taking the high frequency bus shuttle. Easy. Hope you make it there and have a great time!

Hey Randy, any word if they are going to run the trams and buses at limited capacity or put more units into play?
FlyingRon

Twice I've flown into ATW commercially during the show. The first time I had a business trip immediately preceding it. Margy and our son flew the Navion out. I brought a small tent with me as I didn't know if I'd beat them there. I walked off the plane onto the shuttle bus which was just ready to depart. ATW is so small that it probably didn't take me more then ten minutes. from the time the airliner landed until we were on the way.
The next time, I had to work during the show (elsewhere), so I got someone to give me a ride to ATW and flew back a week later. This time I chatted up another attendee who was sitting next to me on the plane and offered to navigate for him if he'd give me a ride in the rental car he had booked.
I've made runs to ATW, GRB, and MKE to pick up friends who were arriving commercially. I'd personally prefer them in about that order.

Have not yet received any info from the Tram Boss. They're fantastic folks and no doubt working hard behind the scenes to get things squared away. I can't imaging running the units at less than 'full' capacity is practical? So that throws "social distancing" right out the window.
I am glad I've begun the Covid vaccination protocol. Had my 1st Pfizer shot this past Wednesday, with #2 in 3 weeks so at least I'll be Airventure ready well in advance on that front. Now I just gotta verify that the mom-n-pop motel I use is still in business.

Well it will be interesting to see how it all works out.
As a daily commuter I’m personally interested to see just how well the new Gray lot bus park works out. Current Wisconsin guidelines for transportation recommends blocking off every other row. Couple that with distanced seating on the active rows it just kills the effectiveness of moving large numbers of people efficiently, particularly for the trams. Beginning to think biking in from the outer realm parking to the gates will be fair more convenient and maybe even faster.
CHICAGORANDY
03-20-2021, 07:46 AM
The trams carry "about" 40 people max at fully crammed-in loading, 30 is more realistic IMHO. (Especially if they are like ME and built for traction, not for speed-lol) As far as I know they have not increased the number of conveyances, and from a logistical standpoint staffing a whole bunch more units over two shifts is unlikely. I 'suspect' that it will be all rows available on the open-air trams with a mask mandate for all riders? But I have NO insider info on that. On the school buses I can see them blocking off rows of seats. Again guess my wild guess.
Over 4 months to go so plenty of time for things to get set in stone....or at least thick mud. ;) From a tram volunteer perspective we are accustomed to changing "on the fly" as needs demand and every year there HAVE been small changes. This year the changes are much larger, but still manageable.

Both for getting to the Air Venture and for getting home after one probably will still need to have a current test for COVID-19 if they and their guests don't fly in their own airplane. Some airports have published that they will have testing sites in the air terminal and as of now most have not. The connection to the airport if I am able to get lodging in the University of Wisconsin residences is still as if I was simply going to get on a bus both ways and pay at that time with no issues about being from a foreign state, even one of the 50.

I don’t think so. I just flew from Tampa to Houston and back commercial and no COVID testing was required and I’m not aware of any testing requirement to fly anywhere domestic, If the government tries to mandate it the airlines are sure to push back.

There are testing requirements for international flights, and Hawaii also requires a pre-trip COVID test. In fact, Hawaii requires *particular* tests, which are apparently offered only on the West Coast.

A number of states do have health screening and potential quarantine (and COVID testing)requirements (New York for one) for arriving travelers but none mandates proof of COVID vaccination to enter that I’m aware of. However, if any State does then I won’t go there on principle; this is a political stance on my part and not medical.

Well last month Sec of Transportation Pete Buttigiege did state in an interview that he was actively talking with the CDC about domestic air travel testing requirements and the CDC in conjunction talked about placing rapid testing sites at airports to catch the asymptomatic traveler. That kinda went silent as it conflicts with the White House’s message of “Gee, see how good we’re doing at getting people vaccinated.” If we get hit with another wave like Europe, it could raise its ugly head again.
After the governor’s mandates got challenged in the Wis SC, they are mostly just “guidelines”. I’ve heard that there are still several counties that are still pushing quarantining after travel to seasonal properties. Mostly north woods areas with very limited health care facilities.

If I were you, I would get on the waiting list for an air conditioned room. A window box fan IS DEFINITELY REQUIRED for non AC rooms as they tend to heat soak especially if there is a heat wave. Admittedly it has been 20 years since I’ve stayed in the dorms but I think it’s a good deal. Recognize it’s a dorm room not a hotel. Busses run regularly to and from the show. You can eat at the campus dining facility (typically we only did breakfast) and there are bars and eateries within walking distance. Now you can Uber anywhere and more shuttle options are available. I always found the dorm crowd to be friendly. Welcome to Oshkosh!!

I am now in good shape for 8 days at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Residences. I am also in good shape from Austin, TX to Appleton Airport arriving on a Sunday (25th) at 4:24 PM. It appears that my only real option is a taxi at that point all the way to the dorm. Options to only go to the AMTRAK station in Appleton require me to meet the bus at one of two times in the day, unknown at this point. On the right day at the right time a taxi to AMTRAK and AMTRAK to a stop 1400 feet from the dorm is possible. For the days of Air Venture which I now have a wristband purchased I will need to check on shuttles. That leaves me with the need to connect with a flight at 5:10 PM from Appleton to Austin. You probably are thinking to yourself, "Now why did he choose those days and times?" Two hours to go through checkin? So my real time to arrive at Appleton airport after Air venture might be 3:10PM.

Be sure to buy yourself a shuttle bus pass when you check in. It’s $30 for the week or $5 per round trip. Did you check with Lamars to see I they have a shuttle running from ATW to the dorms. I would be surprised if they don’t.

I would be surprised if they don’t. That may be something that only flourishes when Air Venture is on. The best I found was take a taxi to AMTRAK bus from the Airport and then take the AMTRAK bus to the University of Wisconsin OshKosh stop and walk about 1/4 mile to the Residence whenever classes are in session. I will next make telephone calls as the search doesn't give me an ability to match up the frequency with my arrival time even with a taxi for the segment from the airport. The busses are in a loop that includes Green Bay and Madison. lamar's bus from appleton airport to university of wisconsin oshkosh - Bing (https://www.bing.com/maps?q=lamar%27s+bus+from+appleton+airport+to+univ ersity+of+wisconsin+oshkosh&form=ANNTH1&refig=d70ac232cbe5423b8057955a98cf3d5a) It just wants to give a way for a GO bus which is City of Appleton and ignores Lamar as well as leave at 5:30PM from the airport on the 25th of July. There is at least a picture of a map on this search result. I was born in Wisconsin but had to leave in less than six months. My favorite region of Wisconsin is the pipestone region. Your shuttle bus tip is important. I am used to fussing over details so "check in" at the gate to Air Venture which is unreachable on the first day or "check in" at the residence. The person who sold me the room only said they have a bus stop. Don't worry I will call and clear these things up.

So Hal, I just went to the link and immediately have several comments/ questions...
Will the water fountains/troughs (bubblers for wisconsinites) and water stations be active/available this year?
Will the restrooms in the exhibit buildings be open and can we expect every other stall closed?
Seating on shuttle buses is not addressed. Will every other row be closed? Can we expected longer delays or is EAA bringing in more assets to offset reduced? Same questions about the trams.
How are food services being effected? Reduced seating capacity? Fewer vendors etc?
What can we expect for the workshops? Fewer work stations or no at all? Same question for forums. Some forums you can count attendees on one hand and others are standing room only. How is that situation going to handled. And I’m not talking about interview circle events.
Will here be a meet the Administrator forum? Will here be multiple sessions due to reduced seating?
I understand it’s a HUGE task to get information out and someone is going to unhappy no matter how hard you try. Ya got to remember that most of us are on he outside looking in and is no intuitively obvious. Most EAAers will work around the changes but knowing in advance is the key.

I'm going to finish my ties to Appleton Airport coming and going with Pronto Cab. The busses just don't fit an individual need. Getting shuttle tickets between The Air Venture and Gruenhagen Conference and any thing on the grounds of Air Venture I will leave for check-in. I tried Lamers bus, Korbussen bus they have medical vans and school busses. AMTRAK bus is for train connections. Greyhound I decided to skip now that I am coming to Appleton and not Green Bay. I'm looking forward to an in person, after let's see, 1969-present with digital simulations.

These are some really great questions, Dave, and I will pass them along to the people who can answer them. I'm only guessing, but I suspect that some of them may not have answers quite yet as planning continues to evolve, but I will work to get as many of them addressed in the FAQ as soon as we can. Based on a conference call with the powers that be this evening it is subject to requirements set by the state of Wisconsin or the City of Oshkosh at the time of AV. Such requirements can change at any time. I believe Wisconsin's mask requirement is set to expire in the near future but it could be reinstated or not.

Well that is a convoluted story....
For those who don’t know the State Legislature overturned the Governor’s Executive Order mask mandate last month which he could not veto. So he promptly issued a new Executive Order (#105) requiring masks to be worn state-wide which is good for 60 days. In the meantime, the Legislature has taken the Governor back to the Wis SC to get his authority nixed like they did last year over his lockdown mandates. The mask mandate will either be killed by the Wis SC, die a natural death in April, or be renewed by a new EO in April. Just to make things interesting, Winnebago County has crafted a county-wide mask mandate order which is sitting at the ready and only needs the county supervisors to sign in case the governor loses at the Wis SC.
But you’re right, public health requirements could change rapidly. Infection and vaccination rates are trending positively. However, if the new variant starting to sweep thru Europe hits us say early summer things here could go south quickly. EAA has a tough planning job but it is easier to delete requirements on the fly than get them reinstated in the short term.

I keep wondering when anyone from staff will answer the question on what used to be the green route. Lots of handicapped and seniors that have trouble walking used this route, also how are people supposed to get to bus park to get busses to museum, kid venture, etc ? Will there be special busses or do we just tell them to start walking ? I keep reading updates, but haven t seen this adressed yet

Hello skyfixer,
We did look at many sides of the matter before changing that particular route. Among the particulars that were part of the discussion:
With the move of the shuttle hub west from its former location to the new one, the route is about 25-30 percent shorter. By the time a shuttle is loaded/unloaded, driven to the destination, and brought back, the time needed for that no longer made it efficient to operate.
The 2019 Northwestern study of our internal transportation, which interviewed thousands of AirVenture attendees while they were here, recommended using the shuttles there for other longer routes on the grounds where there were urgent needs of additional transportation.
The shuttle is subject to both wristband and bag checks every time it went through the airport fence, which further slows things down for the riders especially on a now-shorter route such as this one.
We do have options for disabled or handicapped visitors that we’re happy to provide, from the CARTS program to get you where you need to go to the availability of the electric one-person carts right at the main gate. Our policy is if there is a need for our visitors to reach a certain destination, we want to get you there. As with any first-year change, I’m sure we’ll learn some things that will help everyone as we move forward.
Thanks!

So Sam..... I'm 72 with limited mobility, but not disabled or handicapped. I just can't walk far (arthritic knees). Reducing the very long walk to the bus park by about 25% means that instead of being too dang far to be forced to walk, it will now be too doggone far to be forced to walk? Swell, who wanted to visit the Museum or Pioneer anyway?
Glad EAA is taking the advice of young and nimble kids on how to run an event attended by older people.

Just this one tram conductor's opinion., and yes indeedee-doo we chat with a whole lot of AirVenture attendees every day, all day, happy ones and not so happy ones, especially towards the end of a long, hot day. IF the Northwestern geniuses say that there is no sound reason to link public transportation entities (as in buses and trams) in the same general area, you know.... like a BUS PARK ? Then I for one am mighty darn glad Northwestern doesn't run any mass transit, or airlines - cuz they're nutz. IMHO

I got a ride coming back from the North 40 when Hal Shevers stopped for our group walking back late.
Last show I was closing up the Vintage Operations building after the night airshow. A woman and her young kids had parked in one of the new satellite lots on the diagonal road and she couldn't figure out how to get back there (nor was she exactly sure where her car was). I convinced a chair to let me grab one of the golf carts hand take it to go help her find her car. I'm usually one of the first in ops in the morning, so I returned the keys before anybody else needed it.

I am not a kid, but a volunteer chairman for the group that distributes all the printed materials throughout the grounds. We run four carts, two that are dedicated cargo carriers, and two that the back seat can fold down to be a platform. When we are out and about, we are usually heading to our warehouse to pick up materials for an order, or loaded down with an order heading to the requesting location. Obviously when we are loaded down, we are unable to assist pedestrians, but if we are not, and can safely carry and additional passenger or two, all of our drivers are instructed to ask anybody we feel may be in need of assistance if they need a ride.

As disappointed as I am at the loss of the green line, maybe I should be grateful to be disappointed just once instead of every time I needed to use it. I stay in the dorms so it should be a vital link for me. Unfortunately, it was always late to start up when I had an 8am forum/event to attend. At the end of the day when I'm dog tired it was either too packed or shut down early. And of course nothing runs on Sunday when I'm trying to schlep my stuff from my plane in Warbirds to the dorms. I guess I'll have to work on my Igor impersonation to look pitiful enough to get a ride.

Got to chime in here, in 2011, a friend and I stayed at Sleepy Hollow Farms Camp Ground, we had flown in by commercial airlines and it was a long walk from SHFCG to the entrance of A/V. We seldom waited for the camp ground people to give us a ride so we generally walked, (those days are over), anyway, we were supposed to fly out the last day of A/V but our return flight got canceled so we had to stay an extra day. We were walking back into A/V to buy one more pack of Brats and this cart stopped and asked if we wanted a ride, well heck yeah! It was the one and only Paul Poberezny, we were so blown away, we never asked for an autograph or even took a picture. We did have some good conversation about his and our accent, we're from South Carolina. A month or so later, I called EAA and explained what had happened and asked if there was any way we could get an autographed picture, well, it wasn't long before the picture and a nice letter arrived. Of all the rided I've missed, that one made up for it. Thank you Paul.

My sister has gone to air shows and air museums with me as well as flown to my second son's graduation with degrees in IT and Electrical Engineering. She wants some "me" time after the Covid lockdown and when she mentioned that I said no problem, 'you try to muzzle me when I get into detailed descriptions of what I did in the war.' I won't wear either of my flight suits nor my reversible interceptor jacket. I remembered the cautions I got from Marketing about wearing my tie tacks of C-9A, Skyhawk or F-100 engine as someone will always ask for them. I have a Top Gun patch on the sagebrush Nomex one with an AV-8A "Harrier" and F-18 "Hornet" patches in the pocket to acknowledge they were just a single British prototype and a HIPAAS IBM/CDC card decks when I knew them. Those "snot nosed CAP cadets" have done more good for Oshkosh attendees than most. In addition to the more visible ELT hunts and taking down the N-numbers of arrival (in case flight plans don't get closed), they have performed emergency on-demand services for me a couple of times. My first night camping at Oshkosh, we had one of those 70 mph wind thunderstorms blow through the North 40. As soon as it was over the CAP kids were there, helping people reset their camp sites, handing out hot cocoa, and taking people whose tents were beyond repair over to bivouac in their hangar. I, for one, was glad to see them.
Then there was the sloshkosh year. We had parked a good number of Vintage planes on the taxiway/paved ditch. The arrivals left their N number, where they were setting up their tent, and their cell phone number with us. I typed all these into a computer and then as things dried out two of us called all those pilots back one at a time on our phones after we could move them. I'd just gotten the last one moved out about 2PM and decided to go rest when Jack Rousch crashed. Back we were providing crowd control. People do dumbass things when a plane crashes. I saw people leap from moving trams to try to rush the line to get a closer look. We were supposed to have a organization dinner at a local restaurant, but we were still doing crowd control (and relocating campers close to the crash site since the FAA said that nobody could be in there while they dealt with the fuel leaking and such) at 9PM. I was despairing about ever getting any dinner when the CAP cadets came marking up to space out along the road to relieve us.

My wife and I have been going for years. It was her first Oshkosh that led her to want to learn how to fly (she had been afraid of even commercial flight before that). She parlayed that into a career in the education department at the National Air and Space Museum.

Relax, Ron. Simma down now. I was teasing. I was one of them in the early 1960's.
It certainly did not read like you were teasing, not one bit. Saying that you were once a cadet does not grant permission to malign them. They base right outside of the Warbirds area, so I have plenty of opportunity to see them in action. They are, almost without exception, well disciplined and courteous. Sometimes they try too hard to follow their instructions to the letter (which has included attempts to keep me away from my own airplane getting ready for the airshow). On the other hand, I am not too sure I want them to "interpret" orders at their age. This includes, by the way, instructions that prohibit them from offering rides.
Following up on the other thread, my wife has been at OSH every year but two since I started attending. I fly in and she drives up with the "glamping" impedimentia. We camp at Warbirds and she volunteers at forums and, more recently, with the WOA simulators. There is no way I would be able to keep up my very expensive hobby without her full support. I do not believe that she is unique in this support at all, consistent with what Ron and others have posted earlier.

A buddy and I were out on the warbird line a few years ago and got absolutely shouted down by a 14 year old in para-military garb. Our crime was crossing an unmarked line in the grass. I would have liked to speak to whoever was coaching that young man. Additional training would have been useful.

I think this applies for any position that is looking after crowd lines. We are all too familiar with folks on scooters zipping up and down the flight lines chastising any poor fool for so much as crossing their pinkie toe over the burn line.
The problem here is the chastising. It's often done in a manner that doesn't make friends, and there is no effort to engender good will or think bigger picture.
After seeing this happen all too often, I decided to take a different tack when I volunteered on the flight line. When I pulled up on an offending foot or purse, I'd invariably get "the look" - you know, the "oh, God... here comes Captain Underpants to yell at me."
Instead of barking at them to stay behind the line, I explained why. I explained about the special arrangement that the EAA has with the FAA, and if the EAA was lax in its enforcement of the line, that special arrangement would cease to exist. The first guy I did that to was this grizzled guy that was gearing up to curse me out for being a rent-a-cop. But when I approached, I did so with a smile, a hey, how you all doing today, and if you wouldn't mind staying behind the line because XYZ, his response was, "Oh... wow. Okay, yeah, I'll definitely do that. I've been coming here for years and years, and not one person has ever explained why. I appreciate that, and I'll be sure to keep me and my neighbors behind the line."
Made for a great experience all around, and I got to meet and chat with all sorts of great folks.
Of course, there was also that one time someone lost control of their 4-year old, who went sprinting across the line like Usain Bolt. THAT was exciting.

It certainly did not read like you were teasing, not one bit. Saying that you were once a cadet does not grant permission to malign them. Get a life. I was teasing. Also I do not need your "permission" to make a statement. I said that I was just teasing. That should be good enough. Buy the way I was also a senior member for 8 years and was a qualified SAR pilot who also gave many cadets theit first ride in aircraft. So, calm down and forgetaboutit.

Can anyone confirm if the Aeromart Tent is going to be operational this year? I’m heading to Wisconsin in a couple of weeks and would like to drag some items with me to sell his summer but makes no sense if it’s a victim of COVID restrictions.

I just asked my friend who used to be the chair of Aeromart. He says "I think so, but I'll find out for you."

I was pointing out that your narrative did not read like teasing. At least not teasing in the manner of good humored ribbing. We can all make mistakes in writing that can be taken in ways contrary to our intent. That is all I meant by that line. In similar manner, I did not intend to assert that you needed MY "permission" to do or say anything.
My own opinion (which may be different than yours) is that I am glad that they are there, doing what they do, just like any of the other 5000 volunteers. Like all of us, they make mistakes. Teenagers are, by their nature, prone to be overly enthusiastic about a great many things, and therefore, somewhat more prone to make mistakes. Following up on what Steve Costello wrote, a kind word and good humor does more to defuse any situation than anything else. Just my own opinion.

Placing teenagers in positions where they are essential directing adults just creates opportunities for conflict. Don’t care if they are CAP cadets, riding on scooters patrolling the show line or directing car parking out in the lots. And yes it goes both ways.....there are kids out there that can’t or don’t know how to deal with adults and then there are adults who don’t do well taking directions from kids regardless. Y’all should meander out to the parking lots in the mornings and listen to some of the comments when folks get parked closer to another vehicle than desired.

Trying to direct/inform crowds is VERY much like herding cats at a rocking chair convention. People come to major events like this and often just don't see where they're going or notice what they're doing. As in all things in life a lot of patience and at least a little understanding goes a long way. By the end of the long day those two commodities can be in short supply. I remain constantly amazed at how 'safe' the AirVenture environment actually is.

I agree. My comments were based on decades of observations. Over the years I’ve seen the up and down side of it all. But you’re right, given the number of people and the amount of vehicle/aircraft movements it is really amazing just how few incidents there are.

several years back I was driving a cart on the cart path between building A and C.
stopped to let some people pass. A guy looking at his cell phone walked right into the front of the golf cart
He went down then started screaming at me for not watching what I was doing--he then informed me if he was hurt--he was going to sue me!!! A group of bystanders who saw the whole thing--came up and informed him I was stopped and that HE had walked into me. He got up and walked away. I never drive a vehicle on the grounds during the airshow--people are looking up and aren't watching what they are doing
I am not a fan of the car clubs driving mustangs etc inside the grounds---they don't understand the mind set of the airplane crowds
I'm more stressed driving around the grounds than shooting a approach to minimums with low fuel !!!!!!

My own opinion (which may be different than yours) is that I am glad that they are there, doing what they do, just like any of the other 5000 volunteers. Never said that I disapproved of them being there. The EAA AirVenture CAP encampment is like a Mecca to them. I don't feel sorry for them when it is hot and miserable out there on the flight line. They love it. They love every bit of it and they seek the challenges. BTW: Don't forget to monitor 121.5 after you land that beast or you might have the CAP tracking you down like an escaped felon unless your landings were a smooth as mine.

Hey all, REALLY looking forward to returning to Osh this year...have been away far too long :-(...and I have a question you might be able to answer. Do you know if it is permitted to bring an airband receiver (not transmitter !) on site or is that a strict no-no ?. Would like to listen in thru the daily activities and its also assuming I'll be able to bring one in from over the Pond and thru Customs. Any advice gratefully received

No restrictions on receivers, or transmitters for that matter... as long as you don't transmit. I usually have a handheld aviation transceiver with me when I go.

Note above are the arrival (tower) frequencies. The departure controllers sit on little platforms at the end of the runway called moocows and use the frequencies below:
Departures on 9/27; 128.75
Departures on 18/36 118.9
Departure ATIS: 121.75
Seaplane base 123.3
Arrival ATIS 125.9
FISK "Tracon" 120.7 (if you have transport, sitting out at FISK where they sort out the incoming arrivals is kind of neat).

This page is a few years old, but the frequency assignments don’t change much.

Just be sure if you have a transmitter that you don’t accidentally press the transmit button. The occurrences of accidental, or even malicious, transmissions seems to be becoming more frequent.

As Paul notes, frequency assignments don't change often, but they do change. The listed source from 2015 has former frequencies for Oshkosh Ground Control (now 132.3) and the Fond du Lac ATIS (now 121.1).

I just got back from SNF and it was awesome! When I was walking into the grounds I could hear the roar of aeroshell taking off and a blue angel arrived at the same time.... I shed a tear I was so happy. Most of the rules were adhered to and there was so much space, you could avoid the offenders. I am pumped for Airventure!

Is Wisconsin open for this event now? Or is it just a "hope it will in July"?

We drove up to Wisconsin on Tuesday. Despite the fact we hit snow in east central Illinois and didn’t drive out of it until Madison and then got more on Wednesday, yes. Went out for fish fry dinner and the place was packed. A lot of the summer events are currently planned to be on.

My concern is Washington is in level 3 which allows outdoor events only up to 400. https://coronavirus.wa.gov/what-you-need-know/safe-start/whats-open
I figured Wisconsin was a similar blue state with similar mandates.
So what level is Wisconsin?

Open for business. Have been for about a year. The WISC ruled the mask mandate was unconstitutional too. So no face diapers required either

Not concerned about the mask mandate. I am asking about event numbers. The Sun n Fun leader said they had a limit of 30,000.

Wisconsin has no limits. That was part of the SC ruling. The Governor does not have the ability to impose limits on businesses or events. Only the legislature can,and they are majority R so I don’t see that happening

I haven’t seen that, and this is the first that I have heard of it.

Regardless of what was said, written, or inferred, I was there and crowds were way bigger than 30000 and mask usage was minimal. The only time I personally wore a mask was when I was volunteering in the kitchen. They sorta tried to enforce mask usage in the vendor hangars but it was a futile attempt. There was never a Florida State mandate on masks usage anyway, just local municipalities and counties, and even then enforcement was haphazard and the rules varied significantly from county to county.

Video interview with John (Lites) Lienhouts before the event. It might have been a self-imposed limit.
Washington is in "fourth" wave now and put three counties back to level one restrictions.
It's looking like Arlington is unlikely at current level three: https://www.arlingtonflyin.org/
Thanks, guys. I was there Monday through Saturday, and have the same observation about masks, social distancing, use of hand sanitizers, etc. FWIW, I haven’t found much credibility in anything that the Sun n Fun leadership has said since Billy retired.
I did have a great time, and am looking forward to Oshkosh. Might even go to airventure while there.

It looks like cases are now slowing in Wisconsin. With no outdoor mandates shouldn't be a problem.

I see Matt Younkin had an incident today with some pretty bad damage to the Twin Beech. (Landed with left gear retracted). I wonder if they will get it back in the air for Airventure, he is involved so much in the daily airshows.
Edit - No injuries from the incident before someone asks.
