I have always been impressed with American Legend's history of going from "light bulb idea" start-up of reimagining a thoroughly modern J-3 Cub to first customer delivery in less than one year. Few, if in fact any new GA manufacturers ever come close to this. Too bad they couldn't keep the original acquisition price to under $70K.

I actually have the first production SLSA Legend Cub. Originally bought by Rich Giannotti, New York, in 2005. A couple of years ago he decided he wasn't flying it enough so started looking at finding a good home for it. Darin put the two of us together and it now resides in Farmersville, TX. Just 40 miles from it's birthplace.

Original sale price was $81,165 witch included metal prop, leather seats, avionics package, lights, and 8.00 X 6 tires.

Very cool to have a number one of anything, congrats.

Base price for a 2005 was $69,000. Base price for the same airplane today is $145K. Add a few popular options and it's $200K. Comparatively, a 2005 base Honda Civic DX cost $13,260; the 2019 cost is $17,790.

'Nuff said about voodoo airplane economics.

Folks, adjusted for inflation, that 81,165 would be $105,051.53 today, and wouldn't have those nice glass panels, ADSB out, etc.

So 145K isn't that far off (though peeking at their website, even base models are 150K).

Considering that they're not doing too bad in sales, one supposes they're pricing where the market will bear.

One can build their Classic Cub as a kit for 53K (engine not included), which IMHO is pretty expensive.

You can buy a real Cub, one made by Piper in good flying shape for $53,000. And all other things being equal I'd perfer an wooden prop over a metal one,looks better and in some cases has performance advantages.
