During WW2 many air forces tested the concept of motherships carrying combat aircraft. I share with you a spectacular collection of images showing some of the most important projects involving this kind of concept. Agreeing with the title of this post, what do you think? I'd put it in the in between category of "a neat idea that they never figured out how to implement in practice." The problem is that in most cases the aircraft you'd like to launch from the mothership could just be fitted to have sufficient range to make it on their own. In the airship days, they actually did have some limited success with launching airplanes from those. Of course, if you want to take it to extremes, the modern aircraft carrier is exactly what these airborne versions were trying to implement.
