If you have ever flown into Amarillo you may have noticed a restricted area just to the east of the airport. I was told or assumed that it was a weapons plant or storage area of some kind as you can see a lot to ammo type sheds seperated from each other.
Today there is an article on the news that shows that this is the Pantex plant, where all the U S nuclear bombs are/were made. They are dismantling the biggest one of all, called B53, which weighs 10,000 lbs, looks as big as a large fuselage in side area and is as long as a minivan. Said to have the power of 600 Hiroshima type bombs,and to be carried by B52s.
One trick in the deactivation was that it has been in the inventory since the 60's and the scienetist and engineers that made it have since retired.
