Is there a reason for using T6 vs. T651. I can get plenty of T651 free. I don't know if one is better than the other.

Unless I'm mistaken 6061-T6 solutionized and artificially aged, and 6061-T651 is solutionized, stress-relieved, stretched, and artificially aged. I would be quite happy using T651

T651 gives the T6 temper plus some operations needed to keep thicker materials up to specs. T6 is usually applied to sheet and T651 is applied to plate. If you need to source material forms thicker than 1/4", you are unlikely to find T6.
