I have completed the two wings for my Wag 2+2 and now I need a rack to store them on while I finish up the fuselage. Does anyone have a good design? I would like to mount both on the rack and have wheels so I can move it around the shop as needed. I have seen some with slings; any ideas? I have attached a picture of my wings so you can see what I need to store. Thanks.

I built racks for the wings of my biplane that allowed the weight of the wings to rest on the main spars. There are wheels so it can be rolled around.http://eaaforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=4526&stc=1

One of the bigger furniture moving carts like you have in the picture...

I made a square tube frame that bolted onto one of those...

A wing was placed on each side... and it rolled...

Later... I was even able to put ANOTHER set of wings on it ( 4 WINGS )

You can barely see the Tubing above the center area of the wings...

With two sets of wings on it... I needed to secure them to the center tubing...http://eaaforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=4528&stc=1http://eaaforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=4529&stc=1
.
I'll search for some pictures ...http://eaaforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=4527&stc=1
.
.
It handy to be able to move them...
.

PS Not the greatest pictures... I wasn't actually taking the picture of the wing rack... Maybe I should so day...
I might add... When the wings are off... The rack doesn't take up much room...
It's a furniture dolly...

Marty,

Here's a simple one that I borrowed but would be easy to build. Uses carpet strips as slings to hold the wings, leading edge down. As an added bonus, you can see what actual Sportsman 2+2 wings look like in it. The halves are not connected, nor are they on wheels, both both would be simple to add.

I don't have any pictures of mine for the Stinson wings, as they are buried in the warehouse right now. Essentially like the ones in Jeff's picture, but built as an "L" shape only. That way, they fit almost any wings that I deal with and store easy. Also allows me to nestle a pair of wings in less space than the inverted "T" design. Built mine from some 2x6's, a little plywood and carpet scraps. I did not put mine on wheels due to not a lot of stability with them being only about 7" wide at the base and not interconnected.

Hey Jeff, nice wings! That's exactly what I needed to see. I'll be doing some building next week to get the wings off the saw horse and out of the rotators. Looks like you are doing a great job; how's the rest of the project?
Thanks,
Marty

I found another picture angle of that Furniture cart Wing Rack4568

I noticed I also screwed on a large dowel on the outside edge to keep the trailing edge from slipping off....
I put wax paper on the carpet to keep it from sticking to the epoxy varnish...

This is the same cart I had 4 wings on it...

Plus... I store plywood . Sheets of Aluminum... and a 4X8 sheet of Lexan

I had to move North 200 miles... Everything arrived without damage...

I didn't use the Wing rack... I needed more support...

There *is* the "official" EAA set of plans for a wing rack. Of course, the search function on eaa.org can't find them now, so I'm at a loss to provide a link for them. Very simple to build. Basically the same thing Jeff Point showed above.

The ones I have are similar to the ones in Jeff's pic's too. I set the height of the center posts so the rear spars rest against the posts. I'd rather the spars be against the center post than against something fragile like an aluminum trailing edge or an aileron bay detail.

The link to Tony Bingelis article showing a good mobile wing stand. This is what I built and use. http://spirit.eaa.org/apps/magazines/eaa_articles/1987_12_12.pdf

There are lots of wing rack designs, I used a design from the EAA. I like the type using a sling made from carpet. If you go to Home Depot/Lowes you can buy carpet by the foot. One foot of carpet, 12 feet long will give you plenty of material for a sling and it's very cheap. If you have used carpet, make sure it hasn't been used for anything that will contaminate it with chemicals or gritty dirt that might damage the wings. When you fabricate the rack, assemble the major components with screws so you can take it apart for easy storage when it's not in use.

I built a similar rack but instead of carpet I used old car tie down straps that I had.

The best part of having a wing stand is the opportunity to put the wings anywhere you want. If you run out of room in the shop you can always put them say, in the livingroom. I think the color of the unfinished wings really work here.

I would agree, they blend with the decor quite nicely! (but my wife says... NO!)

OK... I finally took pictures of the Wing rack I use... I have had TWO full size wing "SETS" on this SIMPLE , mobile Wing Rack... and it doesn't take up half the Garage while not in use...

I added the picture where I had TWO SETS of wings on it.. PLUS Plywood and a 4X8 sheet of Lexan and other Miscellaneous long things.

OK... I flipped and flopped it around to give you an idea how it was made...
.
It's all that's needed... Unless you just like spending a lot of time making the big wooden ones...

and have plenty of room to store them...

PS Either the pictures loaded wrong... Or that DOG can walk up a CLIFF...

Thanks for all the great help. I wound up following the EAA design; modified for my wing. so it's a little longer and a bit taller. It sure is nice to be able to move the wings out onto the driveway with no effort at all. Now, to get the fuselage ready for paint.

I use my Wing rack when I need better access to the wings... But lately , I've been working on other areas...

So a Handy place to keep them is on the ceiling... I can get them down , or put them up by myself pretty easy...
.
They are safely out of the way...

Rob,
The nav light is something I made up after seeing a similar set up on a Stearman wing. I glued blocks to the bow and carved it inplace. The outer most piece is 1/4" ply with nut plates for the Grimes light to attach. Fun to make.

Do you have a link for the EAA design? I have a knack for wandering around websites for hours missing the blatantly obvious. My rack was built to fit in a trailer, so it is really wide. I added wheels to it after it came out of the trailer.

Jim,
Not sure of the link but here's a jpg of the rack. I made a few changes; specificly made it 8' long and a little taller to match my wing rib profile. It sure works nice to be able to move the wings so easy.

I had to circle back to this topic since I have a new project and need to store five wings (a biplane with a three piece top wing). This is the "long lost" article by Rev. Bingelis.
