I found this site when I was putting together an article on Ghost Airports (http://disciplesofflight.com/ghost-airports/). It's a fascinating site, and I spent far too long there, lost browsing through pages of great information. Highly recommended.

Paul, I have to tell you your site has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid, although I hope you don't mind that my current job involves in part keeping airports off your list!

Well Tom that sums up why I run www.airfields-freeman.com... by showing pilots how many GA airports we've already lost, I hope to encourage them to support the airports we still have. Good luck in your airport advocacy work!

The site was a great tour of the forgotten past. Hopefully we can fight to keep other airports from ending up on the site as the forgotten past.

The historical content on www.airfields-freeman.com (http://www.airfields-freeman.com/) continues to grow. with two recent sources of a significant amount of historical pictures & information. In addition to other readers' contributions of material, two readers of the site, Kevin Walsh & David Stevenson, have recently contributed a treasure trove of material which has started to appear on the site & will continue to be added to the site over the coming month. I appreciate the flow of pictures & material from everyone else, as www.airfields-freeman.com (http://www.airfields-freeman.com/) is truly a collaborative project. While not abandoned I had the pleasure of landing my Cherokee several years ago at the old Kinross/Kincheloe AFB in upper Michigan where I spent a couple of very cold winters as a young airman working on the flight line during the late 1950's. It was a F102 base then and I think I landed directly on the end of the runway and taxied about two miles. I was also up there for a KK veterans reunion about 2000.

Hi Paul,

I too have spent some time on your website and I was able to contribute some history regarding Carlstrom Field. One airport you may want to include in the Miami South group is Pitts Field where Curtis Pitts was based for many years and developed the S-1S, S-2, S-2A, S-1-11, etc.

I can supply an address but I never thought to take photos during my numerous visits there in the 70's. Many photos exist as published in magazines like Flying and I can find one of those articles for you on Google's site which has almost every back issue of that magazine. Budd Davidson took photos during his visits for articles and his book that he may be happy to allow you to use. Current aerials clearly show the strip and the shop buildings, the runway is now planted with citrus trees. If you still have my email address please drop me a note and I'll try to help with getting this important airport's documentation. Or reply here if you're interested and I'll reach out to you.

Here's a link to a Flying Mag article with a couple of photos taken at the airport;

I've also resumed adding new content to the site. Thanks to historical material submitted by readers, the site's total of airfields covered now includes 2,168airfields, across all 50 states. This includes new additions describing former airfields such as Park Ridge Airport IL, Clear Ridge Airport NE, Fernley Airfield NV, Rubinkam Airport IL, Saugatuck-Douglas Airport MI, Iberia Parish Airport LA, Haulover Canal Airfield FL, Bassler Airfield MD, and updates to many others. This little airfield was founded way back when. In the 30's or 40's. The CAP flew out of here and this was a happening place at one time. I flew in for lunch. Now its a private strip. back in the day it was a municipal strip or owned by the county. Now a family owns it. They had a metal working machine shop on grounds at one time and the man who ran the place ran this machine shop. He built the hangars in this machine shop. They are all metal hangars and all the pieces fit together and can be taken apart. One of the coolest little place I have seen.

It's called Hilvety Airfield. The last Saturday of every month in the summer they hold this lunch at 12 noon sharp. I mean they eat at noon. These men do this even though sometimes it's just them sitting and eating. But they are getting up in age and not sure how long this will be going. Some of us young aviators will step up and take over. Not sure if i will be part but would sure love to be.

I wanted to share. They still use the same out house they did back then. You must like to rough it to fly in.

Rebel Field near Mercedes, Texas is about gone. It is still marked on the Brownsville sectional but very hard to make out. I think it was the original home of the Confederate Air Force. I used to hang out their as a kid and crawl over the derelict airplanes. I am now at T65 Mid Valley, Weslaco.
