For those of us deprived folks who miss out on the camping experience, any new restaurants pop up in the area? Any major changes to those long-standing places?

We're pretty used to:

Ardy & Ed's
Fratellos
Kodiak Jacks
Wendts
Roxy

I thought I've heard some discussion about a newer Wendt's - type place that was worth checking out. Any advice?

Thanks!

Try Ratch & Deb's, little neighborhood bar and restaurant (Don't wear a Chicago Bears hat there). Nice folks and great pizza.

I ate at Wendt's last night; it is great--especially if you enjoy lake perch. The newer Wendt's-like place is probably TJ's Harbor (http://tjsharbor.com/), which has an excellent reputation and is slightly closer to Oshkosh.
A good place to try is Bar 430 (http://www.bar430.com/food/) on Main Street in Oshkosh. Try the cheese and meat board.
Also, there is a nice sandwich and coffee joint, also downtown, called Planet Perk (http://www.planetperkcafe.com/). It's nice for when you get burned out of Subway.
Finally, Becket's (http://becketsrestaurant.com/) is worth a visit. They're located on the river, serve good food, and have a decent beer-on-tap selection.
I hope this helps.

Oh, one more, for desert, Leon's, best custard around, a drive in with cute girls serving you. And Jonathan, do you remember The Grainery? (SP) I still miss that place.

Jonathan:

OK - for perch/seafood in general, would it be Wendts or TJs?

There's Benvenutos, a pretty reasonable italian place in the strip mall along 41 on the opposite side from WalMart. In addition, there's Vitale's, but I've not been there in a few years.

Lara's Tortilla Flats, Friar Tucks, The Charcoal Pit II are long time area fixtures as well.

LaSure's Bakery (off the North 40) and the coffee shop at the Planeview truck stop (down on 41 at Count Road N at the south side) are good breakfast places.

If you're up for a road trip, the White House in Butte Des Morts (pronounced byoo-duh-murr by the locals) is a nice trip.

I remember the Grainery. We used to have the rec.aviation dinner there regularly. One year, I showed up there after getting caught in the typical Oshkosh thudnerstorm, soaked. The owner's wife provided me one of her husbands work shirts (it's used, but it's clean she promised). I still have that shirt with the restaurant logo around somewhere. When the new place opened up in it's place, we showed up there the Wednesday before the show and they treated us like royalty because we were the first of "The EAAers" they had been told to expect.

My other loss in local restaurants was Justmanns, a German place over on 9th street by the Sacred Heart convent. We found that was closed one year when we walked all the way over to it (it's not on the shuttle bus line).

If you like prime rib, the Black Otter in Hortonville is fantastic. You can get a 16 ounce prime rib for those that are extremely hungry. It's a little drive, about 30 minute NE of the airport.

All good suggestions so far. For good, super fast Mexican food I highly recommend Duragos, which is easily within walking distance of the North 40. I just "discovered" a place I'd never been to before after living in Oshkosh for 12 years - Jeff's on Rugby. FANTASTIC food! Their Bistro Burger is superb. http://www.jeffsonrugby.com/

While both are great, Wendt's is the classic and gets my vote.
I'd encourage you to check out the menus. Wendt's is traditional supper club food, whereas TJ's will serve you hummus and ahi tuna.

For those that may be staying in a town south of OSH for the event, Tabbert's Restaurant in Rosendale, WI has excellent breakfast. At one time they had really good pizza too, but not sure if they still do.

I can vouch for the breakfast at Tabberts and I can also vouch for the fact you want to watch your speedometer very very closely in Rosendale.
