Is it too early to start campaigning for Jimmy Buffet for the opening night, or any night, concert?

Never too early. I'm providing my annual request for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Hal, makes this happen!

+1 Perhaps we could offer to polish and annual Jimmy's Grumman in return...

I had heard that jimmy is a non starter because of his crazy high fee.... It's a shame though, as I think he'd be a big draw!

Believe his contract with Alpine Valley precludes him doing any concerts within X number of miles of Alpine valley. OSH is within X miles. Cost is another factor. Jimmy does not come cheap. Polka is pretty big in Wisconsin. Too bad John Candy is gone or we could have the Schmenge Brothers.

PLEEEEZE no country!

And, while I know they're not a big draw like the ones we've had so far, but Da Blooze Brothers that Ford has had the past two years have done a very very good job. It's all about having fun and enjoying the mood, right!

....And now with the most appropriate music, "Learning to Fly"

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (this is called lobbying folks--the good kind)

My wife's employer hires "Talents" for customer events from time to time. Even mid tier acts - Pat Benatar, Hall & Oates, Kenny Loggins, etc. are ~$100k. Jimmy Buffet would probably be a lot more, and I can't see EAA springing for $250k or whatever to hire the opening night act - there simply wouldn't be a return on the expense.

But I'd love for it to happen anyway - maybe they could give him free admission, $50k, and let him park his Goose on the square.

Not to worry...EAA doesn't spring, Ford pays the shot. The Beach Boys, Chicago(twice), Steve Miller Band, REO Speedwagon cost a lot more than the artists you mentioned, much more than $100K I'm sure.

Jimmy Buffett asked for $1.5 million to play opening day, which included a $500,000 discount on his regular price of $2 million...

My vote (if I had one!) would be Huey Lewis & the News or John Fogerty. If it didn't have to be a family-friendly show, the Dos Gringos band would be a hoot! Hilarious (and totally crude) fighter pilot songs are their specialty.

I'd like to put Mumford & Sons into the suggestion pile. You don't have to answer right now; I will wait for you.
While not the traditional classic rock, I think their music would appeal to much of the audience.
Like most everyone here, I have no idea what the cost is.

$1.5M for JB would buy a tanker load of pina coladas.

Edit: Never mind. It looks like they're taking an extended vacation. Reference (http://www.nme.com/news/mumford-and-sons/75582)

I'd love to see ZZ Top....

I was thinking the same thing and the Huey Lewis & the News and Mumford & Son suggestion is another good one. I'm sure of one thing; picking the right genre is no easy task. Maybe a tribute band, like "Brit Floyd." If a person wasn't wiser, they'd think they were listening to Pink Floyd.

Maybe a tribute band, like "Brit Floyd." If a person wasn't wiser, they'd think they were listening to Pink Floyd.

And that would tie in nicely with the 'Learning to fly' idea suggested earlier. As much as I am a Floyd fan, however, I don't think a tribute band would be the kind of crowd-puller you put a press release out for.
I've liked all the bands that have played so far. They've been the kind of bands you hear on the classic rock radio stations that I listen to whenever I'm cruising down US highways. So I hope Mr Ford continues to have a say in who gets signed up :-)

I like BOTH kinds of music.....country AND western. (Name the movie I stole that from).

Seriously, as long as it is someone I have heard of.....so that leaves out U2, Moron 5, and every act on the music award shows. I ask my wife, "who ARE these people?"....(name the movie I stole that from). I suppose the Eagles are out of the question? A tribute band or metal band will have me listening from my tent in Row 82, Vintage I-195.

Location is correct, movie is correct but the line spoken by Elwood to female bartender is actually, "What kind of music do you actually have here?", to which she replies, "Oh, we got both kinds. We got country and western."

Tom Petty is not touring this summer. Whoever gets picked will be a group that IS on tour. I'll tell you who I think could have a chance: John Mellencamp. He's planning a summer tour and there is only 1 date so far: Frontier Days in Cheyenne, Wyoming on July 18. They could easily hit Oshkosh on the way back to the midwest after that. I think his music hits the right demographics. And the fact that he's doing a festival such as Cheyenne makes me think he'd be ok with an aviation festival. :) He could also be part of the Summerfest lineup!

John(Cougar) Mellencamp is not exactly a name draw. Once again, my Monday evening is open.

Well, I doubt it will be JM now. He's got a show way up in Ontario just 2 days after the EAA concert, not enough time to drive. But another group that will be on tour and free during that time is Starship. Do they have a chance? They play in Ontario on the 26th - 650 miles away, and don't have to be at the next show in Kennewick, WA till Aug. 2.

Starship works for me also. How about a Genesis reunion, Daryl Stuermer is only 70 miles away from OSH but Phil Collins would have to travel a bit further.

I vote for a different sound this year and that would be Alison Krauss and Union Station. They will be playing at the Rockygrass Bluegrass Festival in ( ?? Lyon, Co ) on July, 26th, 2014 so they are approximately a 15-16 hour drive away. Not sure if they would be possible contenders, but that's my vote.

Almost missed this announcement. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is a fantastic choice for Friday night. These guys are great and will tear the house down with their big band swing sound.

Bring your dancin' shoes and get ready to boogie woogie all night long!

Ooooh, I can't wait...LOVE Kenny Loggins. I was so afraid they were bringing Chicago back. I like Chicago's music but the concerts were not so great.

What they should do is have KL playing Highway to the Danger Zone with some Jets flying overhead...just a thought.
