I'm planning for Oshkosh 2014 and wanted to gather some information on the dormitories available to rent. What were your experienes at the Dorms? Were the bathrooms Relatively clean? Any information or suggestions you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Stayed i the dorms my first year. The rooms and their bathrooms were clean and plenty of hot water. No A/C however.

The dorms are kept extremely clean. Microwave and fridge in each room. TV down in the basement / rec area. Two dorms are fully air conditioned. Taylor, which is a regular dorm, runs around $100-110 a night for 2014. Sorry, I'm not looking up exact numbers. That ballpark, though. There's also the newer dorm, which is closer to $300/night, but it will sleep 4. Semi-private baths in this new dorm. UWO were having problems booking them at this price last year, so they may have reduced the price somewhat. Being new, they're airconditioned. There are a few rooms in the other dorms that must be used by staff or RAs, because there a few with window a/c units; check with the university to check their availability.

There's Blackhawk Commons which is the dining hall. Each meal is an all-you-can-eat deal (unless they've changed it), and the price isn't bad if you're into eating a large quantity. If you just want an egg and toast, it gets expensive. Lots of other food choices available both on and off the field, though. If you're a coffee and bagel guy, there's a small bistro on the ground floor of Gruenhagen that basically has juice, cofee, donuts, bagels, and some cereals all at ala carte prices. I can eat there for $3.50 for breakfast (or less).

This will be my 10th year in the dorms. Not into camping, and the wife likes it that she can get up when SHE wants and still catch the bus to the show when SHE wants to. Would love to camp with my plane, but, hey, at my age I'm just not into camping that much.

Edit for one other thought. The dorms are super clean, but no one goes in your room once they give you the key. No daily linen service, that is. While they supply towels and wash cloths, please bring a larger towel if you're the type to walk down the hallways with a towel wrapped around you. The supplied towels will only embarrass us all. My wife brings her own TP - she hates the 1-micron thick stuff the dorms use. We also bring our own pillows, but that's just us.

When you say the bathrooms are semi-private what do you mean? Are the showers open or are they small?

In the hall I was in, there was a communal men's rest room down the hall, but it had individual stalls so you really don't have to lose too much modesty.

CarlOrton

The only semi-private baths are in the new dorms that have 4 folks per "suite". There are two bedrooms in each suite, two folks per room, that each share one bathroom, hence the "semi-private." You don't have to run down the hall, but if you're all wanting to catch the 7 AM bus, better stagger the shower times!

As Ron mentioned, ALL other dorms are regular dorm bathrooms - one per hallway, about 4 stalls per bathroom, 4 showers per bathroom (those number's for Taylor).

I have not stayed in the new dorm, but friends did.

Regular dorm showers are pretty decent; regular square shower. Each hallway shower has at least one accessible toilet stall and shower stall.

Still beats the showers in most of the campgrounds. The water is forceful, hot, and stays on without having to hold the button down...

Camp next to your plane. Seriously.

I've been to OSH 32 times. The first 17 times, I stayed off-field, and *thought* I was attending the convention.

What I didn't know -- couldn't, really -- is that Oshkosh begins after the airspace shuts down, and the parking lots empty.

Get yourself one of the new, 12" thick inflatable queen sized mattresses, and a decent tent. These new beds are more comfy than any dorm bed, and you'll be right in the thick of things.

+1. If your accommodations are off site, you only get 1/2 the "Oshkosh Experience"

(and it only took me 1 visit to figure that out, lol)

Note to EAA HQ and Chairman: Please seriously consider building a 10,000 suite hotel on the premises(at show centre would be real nice) so that I and many others can get the full "Oshkosh Experience".

I'd build it, but we would have to charge $50,000/night to break even. lol!

Way, way, way too long. If Oshkosh were held twice a year, would the rooms go down to $25,000/night?

Isn't that Camp Scholler? They have everything from the Budget Rooms (simple tents), to the Super deluxe high end rolling Land Yacht spots.

Hey! I got an idea! What if EAA offered to warehouse FEMA trailers for FEMA. US GOVT would get to park their trailers for free with the proviso that EAA gets to OpCheck them once a year.

I'd bet that FEMA is now paying zillions to someone to babysit their trailers. This could save the taxpayers real money.

That's a damn good idea provided you could guarantee that no disasters would happen that week. EAA could rent them out cheap.

Dorms are excellent. A mate and I attended our first Oshkosh last year and we chose the airconditioned dorms in Taylor. We didn't need the aircon but it was good insurance.

As Carl mentioned, Blackhawk Commons is a great place to eat. Last year, breakfast was $8 for an all-you-can-eat breakfast and an all-you-can-eat dinner was priced at $14. It wasn't just volume, the quality of the food was excellent plus there was beer and wine available at modest extra cost. Bathrooms were very clean with ample shower cubicles and each cubicle had two shower curtains which provided a good level of privacy.

Meal times were very enjoyable and interesting because we met and talked with people from around the world and across the entire aviation spectrum; homebuilders, airline captains, entusiasts.... We had a great time and would choose the same accommodation if ever we returned. I hope this helps.

Don't get used to that, last year was a (very welcome) aberration! :D

This is what makes almost any place in and around Oshkosh great during the show. No matter where you go you never know who you will end up chatting with! Glad you enjoyed your first visit and I hope you have many more!

US Govt spent $3.2B to purchase 65000 trailers over the last five years. And they reportedly spent over $220M to park them over the last three years. So, thats about $70M to park 60000 trailers or about $10M to park 10000.

Howabout EAA offers to park 10,000 trailers for a paltry $1M with the proviso they get to use them during OSH. The $1M (plus the Scholler fees) offsets any potential damage to the trailers (EAAers damage something?!?).

FAA Controllers can stay for free (cause the trailers already belong to the USG).

The USG bails aircraft to industry similar fashion.

This could be a real win/win/win for the taxpayers, EAA and FAA. Lets think out of the box here...

Plus, how does FEMA know where the next need is going to be. Oshkosh could be closer! ... ah in my dreams.

Hi Carl,

Could you please share more experiece for staying at UWO; They have sent the message like "Wuthichai"

"I have made this reservation for you. We do require a $70 deposit per room to hold the reservation and final payment by June 15th. You can make payment by Visa, Mastercard, American Express by responding to this email or calling our office at 920.424.3226 or by sending a check payable to UW Oshkosh to:

Oshkosh, WI 54901.

We do have shuttle service available for $1.50 one way or $20 for unlimited use.

I want to know that what I gonna do for the next step ? how to make a payment for $70 deposit? I am quitely new for oshkosh !

Wuthichai;

As UWO mentioned in their reply to you, the quickest way would be to provide them with a credit card number; regardless of how many days you reserved, you only have to leave a deposit for the first night, $70.

IF you decide to cancel, as long as you tell them by June 15th, you'll get your full refund of $70.

IF you do NOT pay in full BY JUNE 15th, they will cancel your reservation and refund your deposit.

If you do not have a mastercard/visa/American express since you're in Thailand, I would call them and ask how others do it, since many, many, other nations' residents are present for Oshkosh. Perhaps an international wire transfer, but as I said, UWO would be the best source for info on paying your deposit.

Unrelated to the conversation, but we have close Thai friends whose son has the pop band "Nice to Meet You" (or at least, I *think* that's how it's translated).

Oh the joys of showering in a room with a bunch of other men. It would be sort of like being back in basic training at Lackland. You can do most anything for a month, but if I don't have to it is not my thing.

The showers in the dorms are more private and certainly better water flow and temperature than most of the campgrounds. While it is a common bathroom, there are individual shower stalls.

The only real down side of the dorms other than that they are away from the show and at the peak times the buses can have long lines, is that most aren't air conditioned. You may want to consider bringing or purchasing a small fan.

Hi Carl, I 've got this from UWO staff: "Wuthichai

We do not have a payment site online. You can call our office at 920.424.3226 or if you feel comfortable you can send it via email.

If you are just paying the deposit you will need to make the rest of the payment by June 15th. If you want to pay in full now that is fine too.

First of all Thank you so much for clarify me the way to pay,Unfortunately even though I have my own visa card and I preferred to choose the quickest way that you suggested to me ,pretty sure they'll not accept a Visa ,Master,or Amex due to they don't have any online site to charge credit card, I 'll try to contact them by make a phone call or ask them by e-mail or ask any friends on forum board (like you) !!! How about your own way? whenever you stayed there in the past How did you reserve dorms at UWO?

Secondly ,It was really surprised me you have close thai friends there ,Are they interesting in general aviation ? For personally I have no idea about boy band in Thai especially named "Nice to meet you" I think they're very famous in group of teenager 15-21years but their name have a good meaning. ( For me my favourite songs are rock ,hiphop, boy band is not my way )

Again! Thank you and appreciated for your help nice to meet you

Wuthichai,

They will accept a credit card number via phone or email or fax. I have always given them my credit card number via fax with my original reservation request. I think that's more secure than email, but I don't know that for a fact.

Is that a Trinidad?

Wuthichai;

Your visa will work just fine. Call them, give them the number, and they'll ship a confirmation number to you via email and postal mail.

That's how we all do it - just call them, tell them whether what dorm you want (if they haven't sold-out the air conditioned ones), and they'll take your credit card information. Just because they don't have a website for CC purposes isn't a factor.

Our Thai friends live in Bangkok; the father was a foreign exchange student at my in-laws back in the 1970's; we still keep in touch, and hosted one of his son's for a few months so that he could be immersed in US English.

Thank you for shared me the good experience , I 'll contact them as you suggested to me ( Maybe via phone or email ) ,Yes it is, SOCATA TB-20 It is so amazing how did you know it is quite small picture? Actually I used to be a student of airport management who had learned the most subjects related to airport operations ,I don't have not much the knowledge about general aviation especially aircraft type or model but aircraft fleet in my former university they have all amount of aircraft fleet up to 30 aircrafts such as diamond DA40TDI , cessna 172R, SOCATA TB-20 ,Piper .I think it is easy to memorized for this fleet. What type of your aircraft that you are flying right now? How is your a/c look like?

Exactly carl I'll do it as you advised to me, but right now it is hard time for me due to I need to prepare the documents to be used for applying a tourist visa to entry U.S.A.hopefully everything will be finished before I go there!
It is good story to hear that ,you and their family still keep in touch since 1970's ( I wasn't born yet ,I was born year 1980's ) until now ,It was quite long relationship between 2 family and 2 different countries , Have you ever been to thailand before ?

Thank you carl for your help, we will discuss the aviation's topic later, Good day man:)
