By popular demand, we've created a new forum, dedicated, as the description says, to the topic of virtual flying for real pilots!

To kick things off, let me recommend a couple of books on the topic, full disclosure: both were written by friends of mine:

As most of you know, this is a topic that's important to me after my previous career at Microsoft...but, to be clear, this forum is wide open not only to FS and its descendants like Prepar3d, but to X-Plane and any other platforms that you've found helpful in augmenting your real-world flying in some way.

Did you dabble in the Micro$oft Flight project?
I haven't messed with it in a long time, much less MFSX.

I looked at Flight when they released it, but it wasn't really for me. It was a little depressing, frankly, to see what we were building as FSXI be used as the basis for a product with such a vastly different focus.

Hal do you have a link to this new forum? I myself use FSX and really like it.

I must say...sometimes I get a good laugh at myself....This is one of those times....LOL

I always log in by going to " New post ". Very rarely do I go to the main page, as you can see.

That's just to funny.

I have been using FSX for a few years. Buts its just in the last few months I found a few add-on's I really like from Just-flight. Anything related to training is a hit for me and I will take all I can get.

My Basic setup I use saitek rudder pedals and a Logitech joystick. If I every stop spending money on my airplanes, I would like a throttle and radio stack. But my Basic setup is rudder pedals and joystick.

Thanks, Hal...this will be fun and informative! I bought a copy of FSX several years ago and played with it some, but am going a different direction with it this Winter.

I want to use it to augment my currency (yep...we know it's not loggable time, of course) and instrument procedures competency. My project is to re-create as best I can the actual aircraft I fly the most, which is a Cessna 182RG. I purchased the Carenado (a brand name) 182RG as a base (for those new to simming, sims come with included aircraft, but there's a huge after-market in specialized and more exotic aircraft, including homebuilts).

I have a clean copy of a WinXP Pro (Ghost) that I put on a hard drive, installed FSX into it, and loaded the Carenado package RG. (Another note to those not familiar...FSX without a lot of add-ons does not need a Cray super-computer to run. I'm using a dual-core Pentium D with 4 gig of RAM...several years old). I already had a Saitek yoke/throttle quad/pedal, so I'm off and flying.

There is software available that lets one modify the panel and instrument arrangement on an aircraft in FSX (or other sim). Thru the winter I intend to modify the sim panel to match the somewhat out-dated GPS, HSI, flight director/autopilot, etc that are in the full-size RG. Oh...I forgot to mention, I don't know how to do this yet....so it will be part of the learning curve :-)

Another direction I'm exploring is the X-Plane sim in a Linux operating system (fyi...the reason I am using the old XPPro on FSX is cause that's the last OS I bought from Microsoft...other than running FSX all my computers are on Linux OS's), just to have a basis for comparison.

I don't claim to know much about simming, but I'm learning. I'm open to questions from those who may know less, and will be asking them from those who know more. Thanks, Hal!

I hadn't even thought about that, Tony, as my "habit" is to always start at the home page and work into each forum from there, that sort of thing. Anyway, if this is the silliest thing you've done on the Internet then you are way WAY ahead of me! :)

Cheers-

Who-hoooo...Christmas is finally here! :-)

I got my copies of the books Hal mentions out of the mail box about an hour ago. First look is VERY impressive. The authors of both books are ex-Microsoft FS team members with excellent real-world aviation (and writing) credentials.

Based on a perusal of the TOC, Scenario-based Training starts out with a more general view (hardware, software, resources, etc) so that's first on my list. Will provide a more in-depth review after I've been thru them. Gotta go...I've got 2 3/4" (deep) of reading to do. :-)

Oh...disclaimer...don't know any of these folks or anything about them other than what's in the front of the books and Hal's recommendation of them.
