Audio Adapters For Recording In-Cockpit (Offshoot from GoPro Discussion)

I was asked in another thread about the audio adapter I use to capture in-cockpit audio. Here's a link as requested, although it's not the exact adapter I have. These work great for capturing everything that comes thru a headset during flight. They have a standard audio mini-plug to go into whatever you're recording with, and straight thru connection from a headset to an aircraft-type jack. I am not endorsing the particular dealer or brand, just the concept. We've had a lot of fun with it.

To my way of thinking, he's making things more complicated than he needs to, though. He's got two pieces for the interface cable (the splitter, and the adapter) which means an extra in-line connection (not necessarily good). He's also recording to a different device than the camera, which means dubbing and synching audio and video during the editing process.

I'm still using an old Drift HD170 I've had forever, and have no problems with direct to the audio in jack. Two-part question to the group...do the GoPro's have an audio-in mini-jack (1/8") and has anyone experienced problems recording to it from external sources? I suppose some day I'll need to update from the original Drift to get rid of the prop artifacts, and stuff. Hence my questions. Thanks!

PS- Huh...just out looking at some of MrAviation101's other videos. He's still getting prop artifacts with the GoPro!

I don't think there is any way around the prop artifacts.
From what I understand, it's to do with the refresh rate of the recording device, and the optics.
Other than putting it outside the prop arc, it'll always be there, no matter the device.

Re shutter speed and the prop. There are fixes to this........ it was developed for the Contour camera and the GoPro morphed to the iphone as well./

Another technique I have used on occasion is to take a simple earbud such as http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102543 and just lay the earbud inside your headset earcup. The earbud acts as a microphone, recording everything your ear hears. There is no electrical connection between your recording device and the aircraft's audio electronics.

I have used these from soundprofessionals.com in my ear cups, which work very well. I find it is nice to have a tiny (I use A20s) bit of engine background noise which one misses if plugged directly into the intercom:

Good comment, Al! I did that also till I got the cable, and it worked well. Like Pete says, the bit of engine noise is nice, but I don't miss the extra cable.
