South American Visitors?

Cirrus SR-22T for the Chilean Air Force

Santiago, Chile, June 14, 2013 - The first two Cirrus SR-22T, acquired by the Chilean Air Force -FACh- through Cirrus' local representative, Aerocardal, were ferried directly from the U.S. The planes, which arrived with the provisional registrations N102NE and N381AT, have been assigned the FACh serials 235 and 236. Initially, both aircraft will be based at El Bosque, where the Aviation School is located, and will be employed for liaison and training missions, alongside the Piper PA-28-236s assembled locally more than 30 years ago.

http://www.laahs.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=151&d=1371234935 (http://www.laahs.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=151&d=1371234935)The purchase of these SR-22Ts, to an approximate value of $US500,000 each, is part of the "Plan Frontera Norte" (Northern Border Plan), which should be fully implemented in 2014, and will require an investment of more than $US70 million, plus $US10 million to develop intelligence operations specifically. The plan aims to reduce illegal immigration, smuggling and drug trafficking at the border with Bolivia.

According to local analysts, with the acquisition of these aircraft, the Chilean government is introducing major changes on the type of missions to be flown by the FACh from now on, since these planes will be assigned to operations completely exogenous to the air arm, operations that until now have been carried out by the Carabineros and the Investigations Police.

In general, the Chilean armed forces have been reluctant to get involved in anti drug trafficking and smuggling missions, with the exception of the Navy through the Directorate General of Maritime Territory and Merchant Marine.
