I’m considering purchasing a Sporty’s SP-400 Com / Nav / ILS.

A friend of mine said that he thought it would have extremely limited range due to not having an external antenna. He thought it wouldn’t receive much further than the pattern.

Does anyone have one of these who can give me a realistic idea of it’s usefulness?

Don't have any experience with one, but here are a couple threads over on Van's Air Force that you might find useful:

I have used the SP 400 in my trike and it works well enough to fly in and out of controlled airspace around my home . Receives the ATIS broadcasts from about 21 nautical miles out KJYM/KJXN when I fly out to Hillsdale . Serves me well enough .

You can always run a coaxial cable from your regular antenna into the cockpit, unscrew the dongle antenna and attach your hand-held to the real antenna. That'll fix your reception problems. Broadcast range will depend a lot on your battery strength.
