I recently purchased a Druine Turbulent built in 1956/57 by Joe Mathias and Warren Carter of Norfolk , VA. The construction was detailed in the EAA Aircraft Series, File Number 1 Wood Manual, and the Experimenter October 1957 and Sport Aviation Jan-Feb. 1959. Local lore has it that this was the first VW powered aircraft in the USA, first flight Sept. 15, 1958. Can anyone confirm this information ?
