The National Aviation Day (August 19) is a United States national observation that celebrates the development of aviation.

The holiday was established in 1939 by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who issued a presidential proclamation which designated the anniversary of Orville Wright's birthday to be National Aviation Day (Mr. Wright, born in 1871, was still alive when the proclamation was first issued, and would live another nine years). The proclamation was codified (USC 36:A:I:118), and it allows the sitting US President to proclaim August 19 as National Aviation Day each year, if desired. His/her proclamation may direct all federal buildings and installations to fly the US flag on that day, and may encourage citizens to observe the day with activities that promote interest in aviation.

How are you celebrating today?
When not flying, I say we celebrate by posting pictures. Everyone post up your favorite airplane pictures!

This is me flying my Mooney.
I actually used this photo as my college graduation announcement. I put the text in wind screen area, and it turned out quite nice!

I don't have many pictures that show the plane I'm flying, but I do have a bunch of the beautiful scenery I've encountered. Here are a few of my favorites:

2387
Early afternoon view of the California coast and Santa Catalina Island.

2388
Curly waves in cloud tops, over Idaho.

2389
Crater Lake, ~80 mi NE of Medford, Oregon.

2391
Eastbound from Las Vegas at sunset.

2392
Eastbound over central Texas. Scattered clouds above, at sunrise.

2393
Late afternoon over the hills of central Arizona during monsoon season.

2395
Leaving Seattle on a grey, rainy day, popped out of the clouds to find Mt Rainier enjoying the sunshine.

2394
A bit further south on a clear day, Mt St Helens spits smoke.

2396
This huge thunderstorm is a panoramic composite of five photos. Taken early evening over eastern Colorado.

Taylorcraft on skis. Most fun I'd had in an airplane.
