We are back at it again only this time outside. For the last four years, we had our aviation display in the merchants building at the Champaign Count Fair in Urbana, Ohio. This year, it’s outside to attract a different crowd and to have room for the Kolb.
We promote MERFI, The Champaign Aviation Museum, The Grimes Museum, Hi-Point Aviation School, RC flying, Young Eagles, and a flight school. As only four people man the booth for the week, the displays and literature are self-explanatory.
We let kids sit in the Kolb for pictures and recruit Young Eagle candidates. At night, I attract many fairgoers when flying the RC Night Vapor. Hope this gives you an idea on how some are telling the story.
If we love aviation we must promote that love of it to others.

Any idea of how successful you are at getting new pilots?

Over 60 thousand people attend our fair in a county of about 39,000. So, to get our message out to a large number of people, we have used a fair booth.
It’s not all about trying to get new pilots. We want to inform people about general aviation, recruit people for the B-17 restoration project, encourage people to attend MEFRI, start an aviation interest through low cost RC flying, tell kids about the Hi-Point aviation school at Grimes Field, and help me to get to 500 Young Eagle credits, ect…

Several kids who have graduated from the Hi-Point aviation school have majored in aviation at the University level. Some of these kids became aware of the Hi-Point school at the fair.
