I'm restoring a piper colt. How do I obtain a new data plateFollowing the 45.13 regs you have to write a letter to the FAA for their approval. If they decide you are eligible for a replacement data plate, they will issue a letter which you send to the New Piper Corp. with a request for a new data plate. Last I heard, Piper is charging ~$1000 for a data plate. Good luck.

It's whoever holds the Type Certificate Data Sheet for the Piper Colt. I had to pay a company in Canada $400 for a replacement data plate for my Pier J5A. The second post is correct that the FAA must first approve the issuance of a data plate. You also may need to send photos and a letter why a replacement data plate is needed (i.e lost, stolen, etc.) as I was required to do.
Good luck,
