The spruce doubler has only one fifth of E (Youngs modulus of elasticity) compared with aluminum.
Spruce E = 1.3
Aluminum E= 10
So almost no load transfer in the spruce.

As seen in South Africa "kitplanes for africa".
With a tight fit, I don't see why it wouldn't work (and examples are flying).
I must admit my proposition has a flaw, you don't have to use spruce for the sleeve doubler
but plywood and its contribution to bending moment is just marginal, it works for 1150 lbs MTOW
and 2.5" OD 0.083" wall.
