Thread: epoxy removal?

    Sad epoxy removal?

While laying up fiberglass over clay for the intersection fairings on our RV-7A, we somehow got a small blob of epoxy on the belly skin and a thin smear of it on a wing leading edge. Is there a way to dissolve or remove epoxy from aluminum without damaging the latter?

If it's a thin smear some acetone will soften it and it should come off with a little elbow grease. A blob should just pull off if you can get a hold of it as it's not going to have a very good bite to hold onto bare aluminum.

Before the epoxy cures, acid takes off many epoxies. Vinegar is acid enough and can be neutralized fairly well with baking soda right away. At least it worked well for me with two-part epoxy paint, MIL-S-8802 sealing compound, and Scotch-weld 270. A heat gun helps loosen up even cured epoxy from unpainted metal for mechanical removal. Your mileage may vary.

methylene chloride paint stripper will remove it.
