Looking for information of Aeronca champ NC83525 in Fairbanks Alaska in 1951

    Hello,
My dad was stationed in Alaska with the Army in 1951 and took civilian flight training from Fred McGuire in a traditional yellow and red Aeronca Champ NC83525. He soloed on May 27th, 1951. I was wondering if anyone on this forum might have information on this airplane? The N number is currently associated with the B-17 Suzy Q in a status of "storage" and the N number being linked to the serial number 44-83525.

I have great respect to all warbirds but my focus on any history available of the Aeronca my dad soloed in.

Unfortunately my dad passed away eight years ago but we celebrated his 67th, and my 30th, solo anniversary on may 27th this year.

Attached is the rc airplane my dad built hanging in my hangar

    Thanks,
    Jim Owens

You have probably already searched this, but here are all the currently registered Aeroncas in the USA:

    https://registry.faa.gov/currentreg/...ion=2&PageNo=1

Best of luck in your search.

The FAA is not showing a previous registration for that N-number, and there's no aircraft with that number in the list of deregistered aircraft.

This is usually a sign that the plane changed N-Numbers at some point in its past. However, it could merely reflect a hole in the FAA records, which wouldn't be unlikely this far back.

I realize it probably isn't possible, but if you could come up with the serial number for the Champ we could search the registration data based on that.

Sometimes the companies select the N-Number based on the aircraft serial number. I doubt Aeronca planned on building over 9,999 Champs, so "NC83525" might translate into a serial number ending in "525". I did find N81902, S/C 7AC-525. But it was deregistered (under that number) just two months after your dad soloed, and was in Michigan. Probably not it.

Looking at the currently-registered Champs, I don't see a "7AC-3525", which is what I would suspect the number was. I find 7AC-1525, 7AC-2525, and 7AC-6525. However, none of THEM have a current registration that reflects their serial number. So either the number has been changed in the last 70 years (possible) or I'm blowing smoke (much more possible).

Great data, thanks for running that down.

I don't find S/N 7AC 2198 (or its formatting variations) in either the list of active registrations or the deregistered aircraft list. As you note, it looks like it was off the registry by 1963, so it's likely that the information was lost when they generated the digital records.

I do find 7AC 2195 in the deregistration list, showing removal in 1954. 7AC 2196 and 7AC 2199 are still in the active registry.
