    Help.....I recently purchased a Zenith 701.....NO radio, or transponder. I am looking

    looking for cost effective solution for Zenith 701, with NO radio, transponder.........would like to be ads-B compliant without being BENT OVER..................would really like to be 'In and Out'.......HELP//////please

    The radio part is easy...handheld. Stick it on with straps or velcro, or even build it in:

    Since it's a metal airframe, you'll need an external antenna. That can be mounted on the belly, which should give an easy coaxial cable run.

    I've used handheld radios in gliders, they work but not real well even with an external antenna. I installed an MGL V6 with an built in intercom in my Highlander and am really glad I did. It's a very clear very strong radio. I used a Red Tail not TSO'd antenna from Aircraft Spruce that works also works well. MGL sells a pre-wired harness with PTT switches and headset plugs that is well worth the money. This radio will cost more than a handheld but it's worth every penny. By the time you jury rig a handheld and an intercom your going to be close to the cost of the V6. I'm not sure what to tell you about ADS-B. I'm in Alaska so I won't be installing it in my plane. ADS-B is expensive but cheaper than it was a few years ago. The deadline is only 16 months away but that still gives you a little time to shop around.

    Mine has worked out very well, even with a ~40-year old split dipole antenna internally mounted to the (wooden) airframe. I hear traffic calls at airports ~60 miles away, and folks in the pattern seem to understand me just fine.

    One thing to understand about Icom handhelds: If you use the Push-to-Talk switch built-in to the radio, the built-in microphone will be active. This will produce a much higher noise level when you transmit. Not sure if other brand handhelds are the same. The audio output is not fully compatible with aircraft headsets as well, being 8 ohm output vs. the ~150 ohm of the aircraft headset.

    Panel-mounted radios are more convenient, and (of course) are directly compatible with standard aircraft headsets.

    Define "BENT OVER"

    A com radio transponder and ADSB-out to meet the mandate could easily run $7500 after installation.
