    Taper Pin selection and usage

Are there any official (published) specifications, guidelines or best practices for selecting and using taper pins? AC 43.13-1B doesn’t have too much to say about taper pins except that they are used “where the absence of play is essential” (7-101). The Bingelis books don’t seem to have anything on them at all. Aircraft Spruce’s site just mentions the narrow end, but not how much of the shank should protrude at the back, etc. The designers must have had some rules in mind.

Joe, Google "American National Standard Taper Pin" or google American National Standards Institute (ANSI) then use their search engine to look for taper pins.

Most dimensions when using taper pins are nominal. The size pin is selected for the application, a hole is drilled equal to the small end of the pin then it's reamed with a tapered reamer. A long pin requires step drilling then reaming,
