These days it seems that a small percentage of the population serves in the military, For many it is not a first choice unless they have a family legacy of serivice or dont find economic opportunity elsewhere, or want some special career training such as a pilot. Some do multiple tours, even in combat areas, and some are lost that way.
It was unusual and I noted that in the VP debate Sun it was mentioned that both men had sons serving now, didnt get details of where they are or what they are doing.
Our current VP had a son who served, but all the last 3 Pres have only had daughters, none of which served.
I am probably old fashioned but I wouldn't expect daughters to serve in combat and I wouldn't encourage mine if I was in that situation.
