    SolidWorks and EAA

I am looking forward to the announcement at this year's Oshkosh. They are the leader in 3D systems. I just hope that it is something the average guy can afford. Last years discount of $500 was disappointing when I can find several close competitors at an incredibly different price point. The secrecy is scary, but exciting. We should all benefit from this alliance.

What am I missing here? Why does, what appears to me to be a publicly traded (Dassault Systèmes), for profit, company, have their own section here? It looks like I can't even buy their software directly unless i'm a student. If I did want to buy it, it looks like I would have to get a quote from one of their "valued partners".

Edit: I just found a web site that shows a single user license to be $4000. plus $1300 for 1 year support and upgrades. There's also add-ins, professional and premium licenses. The page says: if you are just getting started...budget about $10Kper user.

Is this what EAA typical members are using to design and manufacture parts for experimental category aircraft?

This looks like a major announcement. That would be why I think it has it's own section. Also if we typical members can get our hands on the software, we will have questions, so I think it would be great for our community to help each other rather than bogging down or taxing Dessault Systemes resources.

Paul, that is what I found for pricing last year and $500 off of that was not the deal that lured me. I currently use the educational software from AutoDesk, a 3 year license for all of their software including simulation for free.

The other CAD I can use is Onshape, which could be industry changing. They are all cloud based and I can work on my computer at work, home, or on my apple devices and still have access to all my files. They have have a tiered environment so you can easily stay in the free area, and the costs seem more reasonable.

The secrecy of the announcement is making me wonder how big this is. Adding this section increased my anticipation. Now, in my mind the announcement will need show that we typical EAA members could afford it. Being that we do this for an educational endeavour, we can only hope.

They got a pretty good time slot for their announcement, and it's not being held over in the restricted press area.
Companies like to make their announcements as early in the week as possible to get the most time visible during the convention, and this is right after the opening.

And here I thought it was an acronym for EAA's first porn site: "Stories Of Licentious Iniquity Describing Women Operating Real Kinky Sailplanes."

    Ron thanks for the laugh.

Paul, thanks for that. I did not see the posting. As my chapter's newsletter editor i have some press contacting me, but not for this. This will be going in the newsletter. I will be contacting EAA and changing plans to see that announcement. I only saw the presentations by Mr. David Kasinskas of Graphics Systems in the Homebuilders Hangar.

With their own section, and in a location where you can not possibly miss it on the forums, this is sounding very promising. I leave in 3 days, now I am really excited. The laptops will be packed.

Not at all good timing. This will compete with the usual yearly Icon 9:00am Monday morning blockbuster media announcement and scrum at their exhibit space when amazing aviation business tycoon and jokester CEO Kirk Hawkins will breathlessly tell the hordes that first deliveries will be in 2027 so get those deposits in quickly. By then the ever convenient CPI and delaying factors should increase the purchase price to $987,000.00.

Considering the aging of the membership demographic, I thought it was a "male enhancement" pill.

I don't see anything in the press conference and media event schedule for Icon. There would probably be some very difficult answers to deliver this year.
