    wood and fabric wing - beginners project- Mitchelle B-10

    Goal : to fly , to feel the sensation of lifting off the surface , the bump up of thermals, to soar with the birds in to the higher atmosphere
    turning ,banking ,soaring ,swooping ..Zooming !!!

    to see the earth from above
    last wing i built was a 12 foot span from balsa wood and paper ,i enjoyed the build.. is it too far a jump to a 33 foot from spruce and fabric ??

    the 2 pound density foam for leading edge [d-cell] not shown from wicks should i source at at walmart or lowes ? or get it from wicks after i give them a load of manure

    what else should i do
    i am gonna need a great deal of advice
    i trust all of you , and my local chapter , will provide .
    like on the hang cage/crash cage . the 6061t6 tube has some fittings on joins [connections] ,, can not see them at wicks

    but that is way down the road [maybe 500 hours work or a 1000] , 1000 hours i get motivated i can do that by spring

    since a standard man year is 2200 hrs..

    If you want a great motivator, find someone with a flying B-10 and go watch it fly. Do you participate in the Yahoo Group for Don Mitchell's flying wings? Not a lot of activity there but I'm sure you could get any questions answered. I have been a fan of the B-10 ever since it was built, had B-10 and U-2 plans for many years.

    Your workmanship looks great. If you do get the urge to bolt on a rocket engine, be sure to check out the Youtube video if the B-10 flying with a jet engine. It's cool.

    that is not my workmanship , just a random example from the web of a B-10 center section ..

    i see quite a number of part built wings w/o fabric.

    these b-10 seem to fly good , early reference quote +- 6 G . late reference +/- 4 G . VNE up to 100 mph , 80 seems more common reference .

    this is easy , fill in the blanks and read the chart .
    step 1 : compute the total drag factor

    4] wire drag .zero
    5]exposed struts 4 x 0.4 ...........................1.6

    what to do ?what to do
    a 1983,, zero time .
    what i did: sent message asking about the carb .

    called the local eaa chpt tech/flight advisor. for advice [pending ]

    researched : research revealed Deiter Konig [engine builder of some repute in some circles]

    and judgement . if the calculations can be applied by FAA as +satisfactory evidence+ to an existing airframe can not ,, then: those same calculations be applied to a proposed power plant and airframe to project +likely+ performance ..

    The AC103-7 calculations are conservative, meaning that the actual stall and top speeds will likely be somewhat higher then the calculations predict.

    i conclude that , assuming i can put the engine into condition, 24-28 hp will fly the B-10 airframe nicely , don't you think. ?

    marty: support exists , there is a active [to some respect] yahoo group on these konigs.
    from there i see that when the magneto sys goes kaput they put on a new husquvara sys. some modification require , i think .

    compact radial now owns the license on this powerplant and indicates it is available new built as special order .

    it made me ill buying the 4 cyc konig on ebay. guy built a box for it in Calif out by camp pendelton , UPS failed to show up with the ship label and it was frustrated freight for a while. Blocking engine in the box was inadequate. more proper would have been to bolt the mounting frame [orig included] to the crate with a good backer, however the thing came adrift in transit and nearly ate a hole in the box.
    power plant came off a quickie where it hung for 3-10 years .
    some documentation available both on the compact radial site and the yahoo group.
    Mahle aircooled 66 mm cylinders , pistons and rings too , maybe 66 mm is a common and available size.
    came with a little Gurtner carb that has never seen fuel.
    i am considering my next course of action on this little power plant ,
    what i would like to see is it hung up on a test frame next week with a dummy prop..
    i think i will pull the plugs and intake/exhaust manifold and squirt a little mysterymarvel oil in .
    figure out the magneto wiring , then put 12volts to the starting circuit , see if the starter spins the crank and test magneto function .
    or whatever the EAA Tech guy at the chapter advises
