Google and read "See How It Flies". Any of the above suggestions is worthwhile. In addition there is a good paragliding school just south of you. Go to the US hang gliding and paragliding web site. Get as much and as varied exposure as possible and do what is easiest and most affordable. That and a job to pay expenses will more than keep you busy and out of trouble. Quest is another good hang gliding school (recommended) and may be about the same distance as Wallaby. Gliders would be the most effective but also likely more expensive and a longer drive. Ultralights will get you good connections and you will learn more.

My minimal basic advice: Learn to fly and keep flying because you love it and it is fun. Don't do it because it is a job and you hope to make a lot of money doing it. That way you will never be dissapointed. It is a great accomplishment and I admire your enthusiasm. The military provides a fantastic opportunity.
