    Sad 3rd Class Medical Cetificate(continuation)

    Last week I wrote about receiving my medical certificate in May 2013 that has an expiration date of July 31, 2013. I thought the expiration date was a typo. At the suggestion and advice of others on this forum, I visited my AME this morning. He informed me that the stated expiration date is one year from his first examination and is not a typo. I am now required to start all over again, with the exception of the AME exam, and have my physician redo the physical tests and resubmit the reports that the took the FAA ten months to review. This means that I would likely receive another two month certificate in May or June 2014.

    It is obvious that repeating this procedure and expecting different results would be folly, so, as in a song that helped make Ken Rogers famous, I have to know when to fold em. Sad, but it is what it is. THe FAA doesn't want people my age starting to fly.

    I'm not sure why you started another thread on this. You shouldn't need to start all over. What exactly does the letter say? Typically with most SI's like this it tells you want tests are needed and get them done in the window specified (30 days before the exam or whatever) and take them to your AME. He usually can issue you on the spot rather than deferring you. You should speak to the AME.

    The reason I started a new thread was because I couldn't find my original and i wanted to report. The letter requires me to do a throrough cardio test; treadmill @ 15 degrees elevation 4 MPH, wear a heart monitor for 24 hours and more every 12 months. But when I submitted these reports a year ago, they continued asking for variations of the same several times and drove my heart specialist and my physician to expasperation. Then it wasn't until May this year, 10 months later, they finally issued the certificate. So I see that the whole cycle will start all over. And yes, I took the letter, certificate to the AME this morning. Jim

    Apologies if this was suggested in the previous thread but since it does not sound like you were denied, you can still go down the Sport Pilot route and fly LSA planes and handful of SP-eligible certified planes.

    Absent the actual information, it sounds like you need a better AME. One with experience with SI's.

    It took big brother four months to evaluate my last medical. It came with the usual stern admonishments and yes, the requirement for subsequent testing etc. My AME, endocrinologist and, I all agreed this was the FAA equivalent to a "warning shot". The next time they'd aim lower. We decided I should let it expire and be content with the low and slow types. So...now I fly light sport-mostly. It's sad, we used to have good doctors in Oklahoma who would talk to our docs and make informed decisions. Now we have attorneys and business majors that just "limit liability exposure". I hope everything works out for you Jim.
