    N-registering Kolb

I'm looking at buying a Klob Firestar. The current owner says his relative built it. I'd like to purchase it and N-register it but I'm unsure about the process or the complication that I didn't build it nor do I have a bill of sale or build log. Any words of advice and wisdom?

The short answer (and you won't like it) is don't buy it. The grace period for registering the previously titled "Fat Ultralight" has long past. The Kolb you are looking at is just good for parts to put on a registered Kolb. Someone else may have a solution for you but don't jump on this deal.

Just for clarification, the option for transitioning a "fat ultralight" to LSA is what has expired. Registering the Kolb as E-AB is still an option if you can pull together the documentation that has already been mentioned.

Obviously the Kolb needs a comprehensive inspection by someone familiar with the Firestar before you make a decision to write a check.

If you can find the person that built it, and/or compile enough documentation to convince a DAR that the major portion was fabricated and assembled for education and/or recreation, you can get an n-number, registration and run it through the normal amateur-built certification process. You do not have to be the builder. You most likely won't be able to obtain a repairman certificate for the airplane so you might want to consider that. There's other options but they will be somewhat more involved.

I'm a DAR who certificates amateur-built and light-sport aircraft and I agree with the previous two folks who posted replies. If you do decide to buy it, it is important that you talk with your local DAR to see if it can be certificated BEFORE YOU PLUNK DOWN THE MONEY!

    Good luck!
