With some building Maupin Woodstocks, some pondering it, and some on the verge of starting, I thought I would start up a thread dedicated to building the bird. Let's make some sawdust!
I finished my bench today. I went all out and built a bench that is much heavier than the one Maupin made. Mine is a 2x6 frame with a ply cap. I spent a little extra on the ply so I would have a thick and smooth surface. The legs are 2x6s every 4 feet at 15 degrees. I have not shimmed the bottoms of the legs and will do so even on a very flat hangar floor. The bench is rock solid. I built it using two 12'ers so it's 24 feet long. I still plan on only building the 12m wing but this provides room for the obligatory crud. It's also 12" wide instead of 10". More room for crud. Time now to rig a saber saw under an old table to rough cut ribs. I plan on using a 12" disc sander to bring the ribs to the 'line'.
