What's New? and how can I use it more effectively?

Hal and all,

I've noticed the last week or so that when I use the "What's New" tab to look at new posts it no longer "marks them read" when I click the tab again. (Edit, it doesn't do it at all even when I browse the forums) I'm using Chrome on Windows 7.

Also, since I'm on the subject of the tab... Is there a way to filter it so I just get the areas of the board I want? Anyway to block a specific thread (say one that is named after a magazine and past 32 pages in length??)
