FSX out of the box has some crappy scenery. My little airstrip looks nothing like what it does in real life. I have been trying to change this. If you know how to add scenery to FSX could you please post how to do this step by step. I watched a video showing how to take a GPS shot of ones airstrip and putting that into FSX but I can not find it. If I remember correctly one needed other programs to do this. Is there a simpler way? If not please show us none tech folks how to do this.

Thanks

Tony

Ten years ago, I built an airport for a guy. Technically, it can be done with a text editor, but you end up having to know the language and a separate tool makes it a lot easier. I believe my aircraft modeling tool at the time (of which I've forgotten the name) included a scenery adjunct.

I did find a Youtube video of how to make add on scenery in FSX

I am not trying to add say an airplane or building to the scenery. I want to add a gps or a satellite photo into FSX. I found a video and lost the link that showed how to do this. Then when you flew or used FSX it looked just as it does when you are looking out your airplane window.

But thanks for the link for those who may not have seen this before.

You could try Tile-Proxy, a real time tile downloader/placer for FSX & FS9.

Thanks for sharing this. I am no computer wiz but will give this a try and report back. Thanks again Roman.

I'm a scenery designer, primarily for historical sceneries, developing for P3D and FSX. One of my latest projects was:

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?100233-Released-Korean-War-quot-Chodo-1952-quot-Scenery

If you want to start in scenery design, I would suggest you start with the following tools:

- SBuilderX 64 (scenery design, also photoscenery) alternatively Instant Scenery, but I don't use that
- ADE (designing airports / airfields)
- Photoshop, Gimp as a paint editor
- DXTBMP for converting special graphic formats
- FSX or P3D Software devlopment kit (SDK)
- Blender, 3D Studio Max or Sketchup if you want to design custom 3d objects. Also ModelconverterX for post processing.
- Library Creator XML

It is crucial to read the SDK documentation. If you have questions, you can visit www.fsdeveloper.com (much recommended).

If you are not fully fixed on a FSX yet I would recommend the academic version of P3D over FSX. This is the much updated version of FSX by Lockheed Martin.

If you have questions, just ask. But watch it, this business is addictive :-)

Cheers,
Mark

Mark, with so many people like yourself who design scenery for flight sims, I am surprised there is not someone or a group of designers/programmers who do it for a fee. In other words, a website in which for a fee someone could request a particular airport, for example.

Interesting thought. I guess this is probably because many scenery designers are working on a free time basis and can't commit themselves to any time schedules. If you take money for designing a new scenery you will have to deliver in a certain time frame. I would not want to do this because it would interfere too much with my private life and I really don't need a second job. The second thing is that designing good sceneries take up a huge chunk of time if done right. There's no way a small fee could cover the time that has to be invested. Another reason might be quality. I work with real GIS data like terrain models or vector data, satellite images, or create my own photo ground tiles. I also design my own scenery objects in 3D Studio Max. Not everyone does that or has the capabilities. So there might be problems meeting the expectations of paying clients.

However, there are many scenery designers out there and over in Sim Outhouse, where I frequent and am the moderator of the Prepar3D forum, we designers do take on requests. Chodo 1952, in my link above, was triggered by such a request. I think I worked around three months on it. I'm glad the guy who requested it did so, because I found it to be very interesting and learned a lot about history and the geography of that part of the world.

Cheers,
Mark

It looks like there's a new player when it comes to downloaded photo-real scenery.Similar to tile proxy? I don't know, do not use photo real. http://hush-software.com/ Support at AVSIM - http://www.avsim.com/forum/787-world-terrain/

Looks interesting! Thanks for the head up. I'll give it a try. If someone would find a way of annotating the tiles like Scenprog does, but on the fly, this would be even greater. The lack of vegetation is something I really miss in that kind of scenery depiction.

Arguably the best Oshkosh Scenery for MS Flight Sim was produced by Ken (Retired USA ATC), some 10 year ago.

If you check out the Airport Scenery , on the road to the West of the North South runways, you should spot Hal, driving the Microsoft Golf Cart.

Photo Real Scenery for FSX and or P3D
I have been making photo real scenery for a number of years now and have the grey hair and scars to prove it. My tutorials can be found on Sim Haven Flight Forum web link here... http://simhaven.englishboards.com/ and you can see my work on my You Tube channel here.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtYDSctqtTc
