Jerry Yagan's Mosquito restoration is nearing completion in NZ, with plans to fly next month!

Can't wait to see this one when it comes back to the States!

Zack, do you have any idea of who is going to fly it? Not many people current on Mossi, the only one that I know for sure who has flown one in recent times is Kermit and his has been inactive for years.

And, once again the Jen/Zack party was the highlight of the week, loved the blimp flyovers. Thanks

When are you coming out this way, it is beautiful in Sept.

Zack, you get to see one any time you desire! A Mosquito is very near restoration completion for flight in Victoria, British Columbia. Check out www.mossie.org (http://www.mossie.org) for other restoration locations.

I grew up about 10 minutes away from Dehavilland Canada at Downsview Airport in Toronto where most of the Mossies were built during WW2.

Mosquito KA114 is definitely going to take to the air in the next few days. The Avspecs team ran both engines yesterday, with more runs and taxi trials over this weekend.

There is an Open day at Ardmore next weekend which should be its first public outing, and probably only NZ display before it heads to Jerry's collection. The nominated test pilots are Keith Skilling (well known in warbird circles, flying aircraft of the OMFC etc), and Dave Phillips, who owns / flies NZs only Hunter jet fighter and is also known for his incredible DH Tiger Moth displays. Avspecs manager Wal Denholm will be flight engineer. The quality of this rebuild has to be seen to be believed - it is absolutely beautiful!

The mosquito was successfully test flown this morning NZ time - an incredible achievement!

Congrats to all, well done, you must be so proud! Bring the Mossy to Oshkosh, there are about 600,000 that would love to see a few high speed on the deck passes and 90 degree pullups.

I was very pleased to be able to see this aircraft fly several times at an Air show at Ardmore over the weekend. You have to look out for this machine when it heads back to the States - it is really something!

Great video's, thanks! I had to watch them all several times. We are so very lucky that there are those willing to put forth the time, money and devotion to restore and preserve these amazing machines for future generations to see.

I've always admired the looks of British airplanes. I remember when I was a kit being thrilled when I saw a plastic model of a Mosquito for sale. It hung on my ceiling along with my Spitfire and a large number of other WWII types.

I wonder what route that plane will take from NZ to the States? It would be a kick if it came through Alaska..Louis

My guess would be 'in a shipping container'.

Well, some of it could go by shipping container - but not the 54ft one-piece wing! Its going to take some serious thinking to work out transport arrangements. I reckon they should just leave it here! :)

Hi folks,

It suddenly occured to me, at the launch dinner of the aeroplane at Ardmore, while listening to Jerry Yagen, Wal Denholm and Glynn Powell himself, what an awesome country that we live in!
New Zealand punches well above it's weight and the creation of the Mossie is just another example of how clever we are! So proud to be a Kiwi and to have witnessed it fly for the first time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGCslbIktnQ for my amateur take on the weekend and a bit of a tribute to Geoffrey De Haviland as well. We were representing the Tiger Moth club and managed to have a dozen Tiger Moth's on site and one Gypsy.

Anyway, you guys in the US get to enjoy this aeroplane from here on. Oshkosh next year will be something. How much would I like to see Jerry's Mossie and Rod Lewis' Glacier Girl in a formation pair. :)

I agree you Andy, you are doing some amazing things with aviation down there. There's also this: http://thevintageaviator.co.nz/ . It's probably a good thing the Mosquito is leaving NZ as that would be just one more thing that would tempt me to totally destroy our family budget and head down there in the dead of winter. My wife would also like to see "Hobbiton" from the "Lord of the Rings" set. You have a beautiful country with some exceptional folks in it.

I was hoping the Mosquito would be flown to the States and pass through Alaska, but, like mentioned above, that is probably not going to happen. I suppose it wouldn't make much sense to have such an adventure in a plane which absolutely cannot be replaced.....Louis

I Louis,

Yeh I think you folks over there are going to absolutely love the Mossie (for those who haven't seen one fly), a bit of a shame it isn't staying but we don't have the the means to keep aeroplanes like that in this country although there are a few notables who have invested their earnings in vintage aircraft.
TVAL is a great company as well as you said. They are doing phenomenal things up at their base at Masterton.
The vast majority of the LOTR sets form my backyard as far as flying goes. If you ever plan to come out here do give me a shout. Can point you in the right direction particularly in the South Island. :) And by the way, I was at Oshkosh this year (my first time in the States). Covered a fair bit of CA, and flew across in a Tiger Moth from a wee town in Iowa, to Wittman Regional, and absolutely loved it. incredible country, great people, and what an aviation scene you guys have. I will be back. :)

regards
Andy

There's a nice article about the Mossie's first flight by Ian Brown, editor of EAA's Bits and Pieces newsletter here:

and in other related news, the Mosquito has been confirmed for the 2013 Hamilton Airshow put on by the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum: http://www.hamiltonairshow.com/performing-and-display-aircraft.aspx

I've never had a passport, but I might have to get one now!

Zack, get that passport now! The CWH is one of the top museums in the world...and not a static museum, every plane flys! The show in June is superior with other warbirds from across Canada and a bunch of CAF aircraft as well. Hamilton is an hour north of Buffalo, NY and 35 minutes west of Toronto where I live. If you come, let me know and I'll show you some great Canadian hospitality! I'll even take you to the original Dehavilland factory in Toronto where most of the WW2 Mossies were built.
