Vets in College

News story today, some colleges offer enrollment to vets, and get payments from the govt.

But many vets may not have been to college or be out of practice for studying, having been away for years.

88 % of vets drop out the 1st year back in school, and only 3% finish their degree.

It may take some special help for many vets, or maybe some job offers that don't require a full degree.

Yeah, it's rough for a couple of reasons:

1. You're out of practice studying.
2. You don't fit in with the kids as an older student.
3. You're not as used to living the "student life" (i.e., living on next to nothing) after having received a regular paycheck (be it from the service or just working jobs).

Many young adults join the military in the first place because they struggle with academics during high school and don't want to pursue a college education. It's doubtful the dismal success rates for many veterans would be any better if those kids went straight to college after HS without joining the military. It should not come as a surprise that they will struggle when they return to school several yrs later. Seems to me we should be offering the academic "help" during their primary education. Also not surprising that the gov. will continue to throw money at an obviously failed program.
